One of the most popular questions of a novice fighter is how to beat with his hands. “Remember that your crown is direct!” (C) Vladimir Vysotsky. Vladimir Semyonovich in a comic song quite rightly singled out this trick: a well-placed direct strike should be in the arsenal of any fighter who owns shock equipment. Let’s figure out how to put a direct hit with the hand, the technique of applying with both hands from a place and in motion.

First of all, how to clench your fist. The thumb covers the second phalanges of the middle and forefinger. At the time of impact, the fist clenches, the back side is in line with the forearm.

The strength of the impact is determined by the correct attachment of body weight and “rigidity” - the position of the shoulder and the setting of the beating arm. Also see my strike exercise article

General principles of impact. When hitting a place, push hard with the same foot. The hand flies to the target relaxed (however, we always hold the fist tightly), in the final phase of the strike we strain the back, shoulders, arm. The blow is exhaled. After the strike, do not “stick”, immediately return the fist to the head, not forgetting to block the ribs with the forearms. When applying a direct strike, almost all beginners have an error. We don’t fly forward, the projection of the nose should not go beyond the knee of the front leg, otherwise you will lose balance and risk missing a counter strike. Instead, insure your head with the correct position (head down, look at the opponent from the bottom) and with your second hand. Leave the shoulder of the beating hand forward, but do not “reach out” for the header. The elbow with a direct impact is not fully bent, we leave the hand slightly bent, otherwise in case of a slip, you can be injured.

Direct hit with the front hand (jab). For clarity, suppose we are working in a left-handed stance. We push with the left foot, transfer the weight to the right, the knee with the left a little inward. A push with a foot leads the pelvis and shoulder. The right shoulder leans back a little. We throw the hand at the target, in the final phase of the strike we turn the arm so that the knuckle of the middle finger is slightly higher than the knuckle of the index. It is they who strike, in the end we strain. The shoulder is brought forward, the head is slightly lowered, the right hand insures against an oncoming direct blow.

Direct hit with the far armhe right straight. We are pushed out with the right foot, weight on the left. The leg pulls the pelvis and shoulder, the hand is simultaneously thrown at the target. The shoulder in the final phase of the strike is pushed forward, the arm is turned, as with jab, we strike with the knuckles of the index and middle fingers. With our left hand we insure the head and body from the oncoming blow. The elbow, when striking directly, is always directed downward; a blow is applied without backswing and elbow removal. As they say in our hall, "The elbow flew to the side - a direct hit became noticeable and long." The hand flies when struck relaxed, straining only in the final phase.

Direct hit with the front hand on the substep. The length of the safe step is equal to the width of the foot, you do not need to rush at the opponent, risking a counter strike. The step can be both the front foot (attached step) and the far one (cross). We will analyze a direct hit on the step with the front foot (crosses will become clear after studying the section “combination of punches”). We push with the right foot, we forward the case forward. With our left foot we walk from toe to full foot. The moment of setting the foot coincides with the final phase of the stroke. This synchronism in combination with the removed shoulder is the key to a good hard blow, watch the video. Head forward do not fall, we keep the weight on the far leg.

The right line is a step forward. Typically, this strike is performed after a feint left, step defense or slope. We push with the right foot, step with the left, weight on the left. We don’t fly forward, we insure with our left hand, the moment of placing the leg (from toe to full foot) coincides with the defeat of the target. As usual, the hand flies relaxed, straining only at the end.

The right line is a step to the left. It is used to counter attack the opponent, it usually goes well as a counter strike when the opponent attacks with a jab or other kick with his left hand or foot. The technique is simple, we step with the left foot to the left, while throwing out the right hand, the moment of setting the foot coincides with the defeat of the target. We comply with all the above principles. After execution, it is reasonable to continue the attack with the left side.

Direct kicks a step back. They are used to stop the advancing enemy. Rule: left hand beats - step with the left foot. We beat with the right - we walk with the right foot. Synchronize your arms and legs and your strokes will be effective.

An important point. Some athletes weakly beat from the front hand, preparing the main attack from the far. However, in a real battle, an opponent must be immediately disabled, not replayed. When training blows on paws, bags and other shells, as well as in sparring, strive to hit hard with both hands. This skill will be useful in both sports and real hand-to-hand combat.

Exercises to increase the power of punches

Exercises are not aimed at increasing muscle mass, but at developing the ability to sharply push one's legs for a good investment in body weight kick.

Exercise 1. Pushing the legs. Stand up frontally. Push out sharply with your left foot, transferring the weight to the right. When performed correctly, the leg push spins the pelvis and the entire body, leading the left shoulder forward. This is exactly the mechanics of impact. For a good hard direct hand strike (and not just a direct one), it remains to correctly place the beating hand. Right-kicks are performed similarly. This exercise was suggested by my good friend Sergey Kuzminykh, who trained several Russian kickboxing champions. For a better understanding, see the video below.

Exercise 2. Popping with a partner. Stand with a partner opposite each other, take battle stances. Lean your hands against each other in the left shoulder. At the same time, abruptly push out using the mass of cases, as in a shock. The exercise is not so easy to describe, for clarity, watch the video.

Exercise 3. Kicks with dumbbells. Take 1-2 kg dumbbells in your hands and leave the blows in the air. Strike as sharply as possible, as if pushing the dumbbells and stopping the movement, straining at the end. You can work shadow boxing on morning exercises, you can arrange training for an evening TV, throwing 20-30 beats with each hand, doing 10 approaches. This exercise can be practiced both at home and in the main training. After completion, "scatter" your hands, beating blows in the air without dumbbells. The exercise is illustrated in the video.

Exercise 4. Squats with a partner. In addition to the good development of the leg muscles, this exercise helps to increase the impact force. Put your partner on your back, as in the photo, legs wide, socks out. Squat shallow, no discomfort in the knees should not be.

Please note that you must see the target, for this you need to look at the opponent. In a U-turn, we will definitely look where we hit.

Next, you just need to straighten your leg, as sharply forward as possible. Different styles are taught differently. You can kick with your back to the opponent (only turn your head). But it’s easier to beat being sideways to the opponent (the strength of this blow is no less).

This blow can be applied from different distances. Firstly, it is very good for long distance. It does not allow the opponent to make a counter-movement, it is difficult to “fail” it (it is very long), it is difficult to meet it (it is primarily attacked by the foot, not the body).

In principle, this blow can also be delivered from close range, as is done in some sports when care is done a little to the side and the foot is “shot” into the opponent’s body.
