If you plan to enter a foreign university, then you have probably come across a concept such as the GPA. Grade Point Average is the average point of your certificate or diploma.

In this article, we will figure out how to calculate the GPA and how to use the average score not only for entering a university, but also when looking for a job.

### What is a GPA?

In the United States, when entering college or when applying for a job, it is necessary to provide information about the average grade point.

It is calculated in this way: scores A, B, C, D, F are equal to scores 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, 0.0, respectively. Points for all subjects are summed up and divided by the number of subjects.

• 22 points
• 7 items
• We consider: 22/7 = 3.14 GPA.

In addition to estimates in the United States consider Credits in subjects. To calculate the GPA along with loans, they multiply each assessment on the subject by a point on this loan. Then everything is added together and divided by the total amount of loans.

At some universities, grades with pluses like A + or B +, which give another half point, are taken into account. In others, the GPA is rounded to the nearest whole number. In general, each university has its own rules.

### How to calculate GPA?

To calculate the exact GPA, Russian students are helped by specially trained people from the translation bureau or universities and schools themselves.

The main thing is to find out the rules of admission to the university of your choice, at least in order to determine whether it is necessary to take into account the "offset / non-offset" when calculating the average score.

If the "offsets" are taken into account, then they are equated with a rating of "excellent", "failure" - to a zero point.

#### The GPA from the grades is calculated as follows:

1. All grades from a diploma or certificate are added up,
2. The amount is divided by the number of items.

In the documents you need to register that the score is 4.3 out of 5 possible, according to our five-point system.

To translate grades into a 4-point system, as in the USA, we focus on the following data:

• Score 5 = 4.0,
• Score 4 = 3.0,
• Score 3 = 2.0,
• Score 2 = 1.0.

The remaining actions are the same - add up the points and divide them by the total number of items.

Each institution has its own minimum GPA for admission. For example, to enter the University of California, Berkeley, the average mark must be at least 3.87, and for a business school Hult - 2.5.

### Online GPA Calculators

Special online calculators will help you calculate the GPA yourself, but you should not rely on them entirely. Calculators take into account your grades and the number of academic hours in this subject.

• We look at our diploma, where next to the marks is the total number of hours on the subject.
• We enter the data into the lines of the calculator and get the result.

To continue studying in the United States, you need a high GPA score, or at least meet the minimum requirements of the university. Without this point, applicants are screened out at the first stage.

### Why use a GPA in a resume?

If you plan to look for work in the USA, then your GPA will be of interest to the employer. Many large companies, such as Bank of America, Procter & Gamble, Ernst & Young, confirm that they want to see the GPA in the resume not lower than 3.0, and some 3.5.

Usually a high score is required in banking and accounting, as well as in medicine.

GPA can be calculated at any time, on any segment of training. And so that it is always high, it is worth visiting all the objects, since the total amount of the GPA depends on each of them, whether it be choral singing or quantum physics.

With the GPA sorted out, now there is a question of admission. Before choosing a university, we advise you to read about how not to get confused in international university ratings and what are the main differences between the educational systems of the USA and the UK.
