The idea to make a climbing wall for your children a long time ago, but everything was put aside for a long time and now the muse came and drove off. I consider it important and necessary to have various children's entertainment corners in the house, especially when you have 3 active boys. They need somewhere to put energy and physically develop, from the same considerations a Swedish wall with a horizontal bar was installed. In my opinion, a climbing wall gives a child’s development not only physically but also mentally, develops quick wits, coordination, and tactics. When training at the climbing wall, literally all muscles are involved, I was convinced of this on my own experience more than once, the muscles of the arms, legs, back, and lower back are especially tense. In addition to all this, you become more enduring.

After looking at the Internet various suggestions and installation options, I decided to make it myself, the more I’ve already done the closet and there’s a little experience with it.

DIY climbing wall

Action plan:

  • Order hooks
  • Decides on the wall
  • Installation of wooden battens and plywood panels
  • Surface cleaning
  • Design of varying complexity

Home climbing wall will be an excellent simulator for kids from 4 years and above. First you need to understand the purpose of the climbing wall, it is clear that we are building it for the child, which means that the dimensions should be small and the hooks are convenient.

A week before the start of construction, order hooks for a climbing wall in an online store, it is better to let them come earlier than to wait. If there is a bearing wall in the nursery, then we select wooden slats from 40x40 mm. Then we prepare plywood panels with a thickness of 13–16 mm, (individual sizes). Be sure to monitor the rigidity of the structure so that it does not collapse when the baby climbs. To strengthen the base, you can use iron corners.

After choosing a wall, attach wooden slats to it using 8x65 mm dowels and 6x90 mm screws, four for each rail, more can be if you live in a brick house and one self-tapping screw went between the bricks, and now it is not holding well.

Further to the slats we fasten plywood boards from 13–16 mm thick. But first, we make the basis where we will insert the hooks. Before installing the shields, we make holes in them with a diameter of 11.5 mm, and then drive a nut with a thread diameter of 10 mm, we hammer into these holes. Such a nut is called a “bulldog” and we will attach hooks to it at the end.

When the nuts are installed, we begin the installation of boards, here we just take 5x50 mm screws and fasten to the rails. Next, we remove any irregularities, using sandpaper, so that there is no bullying. The construction of a climbing wall with their own hands took only one day, but the final stage remained - it was to make up several options of trails for the child from the hooks.

Anchorages and selection of hooks

A climbing wall for children should be equipped with hook-shaped hooks, which is convenient to hold on to. We place them at a distance of 40 cm from each other. When fastening the hooks, we make several runs so that the child himself can choose which one to climb on. Do not cling hooks tightly, it is best to drill holes in each sheet of plywood to make 4-5 rows of holes, and then form a track, first easy, later complicate the development of the child.

Do not fasten the hooks directly to the wall - this will entail damage to the wall, and you can no longer change the complexity of the route.

For safety, cover the mat below so that when falling, the baby does not get hurt.

When the work is finished, you will get a great simulator that will bring a lot of joy to your child. A do-it-yourself climbing wall is done in just one day, it has a small price, but it will bring a lot of positive, and it will also help to comprehensively develop the baby’s body at an early age.

Tool Needed:

  • Screwdriver
  • Roulette
  • Pencil
  • Hammer
  • Brush
  • Hexagon
  • 12 key

First of all, I bought 2pcs in one well-known plywood repair shop, dimension 1520 by 1520 mm and 12 mm thick. If anyone wants a stronger one, you can take a thickness of 15mm, but as practice has shown, 12 is enough. Because the width of the future climbing wall I planned to do 1200mm at once in the store did a cut to the desired size. My height from floor to ceiling is 2500mm, less will not be interesting.

First screw and assemble the frame.

He connected two plywood with vertical bars and laid a block to strengthen at the junction. We conducted a small test with my son and it was decided from beginning to end to additionally lay a block in the middle so that the plywood does not bend.

If you use plywood of 15 or 18 mm, I think it would be possible to get around without additional gain, but thinner i.e. It’s definitely not necessary to use 10mm, the mortise nuts will protrude from the hole and it will be impossible to fix the hooks, which are mounted close to the wall.

Marking and drilling.

An important point is the markup for future hook positions. After reading the literature about the construction of climbing gyms, we will hope for specialists in this field, the step was 25cm, which will be optimal for children. I drew lines horizontally and vertically and at the intersections I made holes with a drill on a tree with a diameter of 12 mm where the mortise nuts (bulldogs) are hammered. By the way, it’s better to drill from the front side, it’s okay that the markings remain, they will subsequently disappear, at the moment the drill leaves the tree, the plywood peels off and roughness remains. I got 36 holes on 22 hooks, what are they for? Subsequently, it will be possible to easily change the complexity of the route by rearranging the hooks into existing places.

After everyone had marked and drilled holes, I sanded the board from foreign nicks and ledges with a grinder with a special nozzle. You can skip this step by purchasing already polished plywood.

It remains to paint and screw the entire structure to the wall. I try to attract Kiryuha to painting and indeed to everything that I do myself, I will describe the importance of this moment in the next article.

We all painted in bright yellow in two layers. The design turned out to be of impressive size and the heavy mother don’t worry, if she doesn’t fall a little, therefore, for security, I fastened it with a 120mm dowel in depth in 6 places on the sides where the bars had been attached before. Result:

Three sets of hooks of different sizes S, M, L were ordered, bolts come complete with each hook for a hexagon. They fixed how the soul tells us and that’s what happened, I’ll say right away the location of the hooks has changed a couple of times, because Artem and Arseniy also want to climb, but they cannot if they leave spaces.

Home climbing wall for children: what is it

In its simplest form, a climbing wall is vertical surface with small protrusionslocated in a certain way, depending on the complexity of the route. A more extreme version implies the presence of additional inclined planes.

Photo 1. Climbing wall for children, made in the home. The design has several planes.

The main advantage of a climbing wall is that it Does not take up much space indoors. The presence of such a sports equipment will help the child not only to throw out excess energy, but also to improve coordination, improve body flexibility, train strong hands and tenacious fingers. Climbing activities develop perseverance, visual memory and logical thinking.

The geometry and dimensions of the climbing wall will depend on the size of free space, which is planned to be allocated for its device. The easiest option for placing a climbing wall is one of the walls of the room. If space allows, you can build an angular climbing wall on two adjacent walls. An advanced option is a projection with a negative slope. The apartment has a standard layout with the height of the rooms 2.5-2.8 m it is advisable to make a simulator under the very ceiling.

How to make a home wall for children's climbing with your own hands

A self-made climbing wall is a plywood shield reinforced around the perimeter with a wooden beam.

For reliability, the structure is additionally reinforced with stiffeners from the same beam in the center, and, if necessary, in other places.

Special children's hooks, which are a artificial stones of various shapes and sizes.

You can buy them in specialized sports stores or order online. The hooks should not be too small so that the child’s arms and legs do not get tired.

Reference. High-quality hooks for a climbing wall are made from a mixture of quartz sand and polymeric materials. The surface of such products is rough, which allows the arms and legs not to slip during lifting.

At the initial stage, smaller stones are placed below and serve as a support for the legs. As the child’s mastery grows, small hooks can be moved higher, turning into palm rests.

Design and calculation of necessary materials

For the manufacture of climbing wall will need:

  • thick plywood 10-15 mm
  • wooden beam 40 * 70 mm
  • dowels and countersunk bolts for attaching the beam to the wall,
  • self-tapping screws for connecting the frame and the base,
  • set of hooks and fasteners for them,
  • hexagon for tightening bolts,
  • drill or screwdriver with a drill 11 mm
  • emery cloth
  • paint and decorative elements as desired.

The first step will be design future climbing wall. Having decided on the location, you need to calculate the required amount of materials. The size of plywood directly depends on the area of the future simulator. Number of hooks - 5-7 pieces per 1 square. m If the hardware does not come with them in the kit, then you will need to purchase it additionally.

Usually suitable for connection furniture nut DIN 1624 M10 (the so-called bulldog) with "antennae" at the edges, digging into the surface of plywood. The nuts will need an appropriate size. bolts DIN 912 M10, drawn by hexagon. The easiest option is to take the hook with you to the store, where sellers will pick up fasteners suitable for the climbing wall.

Wireframing

At the second stage, the frame of the future climbing wall is created. Holes are drilled along the perimeter of the base in the wall with a step of 50–55 cminto which plastic dowels are driven in.

To give the structure additional strength, it is necessary to add several stiffeners by screwing inside the perimeter parallel to the floor surface 2-3 planks of timber.

The length and diameter of the dowels are selected depending on the material of the walls, and the size of the bolt is calculated by the formula: sheet thickness + beam thickness + dowel length. Countersunk bolts should be taken, since plywood will be screwed on top of the frame.

Attention! It is forbidden to mount a climbing wall or hooks themselves to drywall constructions!

Foundation preparation

Followed by prepare the foundation climbing wall. Plywood sheets pre-cut in accordance with the design of the climbing wall.

This can be done independently with the help of a manual milling cutter or to order a cut - often sellers of building materials offer such a service. Finished foundation mark for future holes.

The best option is mesh with a step of 20-25 cm horizontally and vertically, which in the future will allow you to rearrange the hooks, creating new routes of varying complexity on the climbing wall.

Then a drill with a drill 11 mm (provided that diameter of the “bulldog” nut 10 mm) holes are made. The procedure is carried out on the front side so that possible chips are on the reverse. After that, a bulldog is driven into each hole on the back side. The finished base is screwed to the frame using screws of the appropriate length, if necessary, is treated with an emery cloth and covered with paint.

Installation of hooks

The final step will be hook installationwhich are fixed in the selected holes using bolts tightened with a hexagon. This design of a climbing wall allows you to easily change the arrangement of stonescomplicating or simplifying the route.

At first glance, it might seem a simpler option to screw the plywood sheet directly to the wall, however it is not always possible to choose the right bolt length for hooks, which leads to difficulty in tightening.

Photo 2. Special hooks for a children's climbing wall. They vary in shape, size and color.

The most budget option climbing wall - fixing hooks directly to the wallwithout using plywood - has even more disadvantages. The only track will quickly bore the baby, and to create new routes you will have to drill regular holes in the wall itself, which, moreover, will quickly get dirty and become dirty.

Conclusion

Before a child starts using a climbing wall, you should take care of safety by spreading a sports mat or mattress belowwhich will mitigate the fall. So that the baby’s hands do not slip when climbing the climbing wall, you can treat them with magnesia. And of course, at the initial stage of mastering a new sports equipment, an adult must be near the young conqueror of the peaks.

To whom the construction budget is interesting, I will describe approximately what happened to me:

  • plywood 12mm 1024 rubles. I took 2pcs of size 1520 to 1520 and sawed
  • hooks 2950 rubles for 3 sets of different sizes and shapes
  • mortise nuts (bulldogs) 360 rubles
  • yellow paint 364 rubles for 0.9 liter. It’s better to take it odorless, otherwise I don’t know what the smell would be in the apartment.
  • Bolt and self-tapping screw 200 rubles
  • I did not take the bars into account
  • wood screws also remained from past work.

The total cost of a home climbing wall cost us: 4900 rubles
