How to clean an antique copper, nickel or brass samovar from scale inside and out to shine


This article describes how to properly care for nickel and chrome surfaces of various interior items and plumbing.

Nickel-plated and chrome-plated coating of various items of interior and plumbing is considered to be one of the most practical and with proper care can serve for many years. Thanks to practicality and low cost, a lot of household items have this coating - it can be a mixer in the bathtub, and a door handle and furniture accessories. So that such products do not fade over time and remain in good condition for a long time, you need to know how to properly care for them.

The first thing to keep in mind is that in no case should you use any hard abrasive substances or iron brushes and sandpaper when cleaning nickel and chrome surfaces. This causes damage to the surface, leaving scratches.

In addition, it must be borne in mind that the use of acid-containing substances, solvents, various means for removing lime deposits is also unacceptable. Otherwise, we get not a shiny, mirror surface, but a dull and darkened.

What should be used to clean these surfaces? Of course, in the first place are branded, specially designed products care products with a nickel and chrome surface. But you can use simpler means, but with a composition that implies the presence of soft or fine abrasives, organic solvents, ammonia, and wax. All this can be read on the label of the manufacturer of the cleaning product.

The most common, so-called “home” method for cleaning a chrome surface is carried out using a soft cloth and a warm soapy solution. Moreover, if limescale has formed on the surface, then you can get rid of it with the help of grape vinegar.

To clean nickel-plated surfaces, special pastes and liquid products are used, as well as ordinary chalk or a solution prepared in this way: one teaspoon of salt is added to one tablespoon of vinegar.

Rust from a nickel-plated product can be easily removed using grease using the following method: any animal or fish oil must be applied to the rust stains, and after a couple of days, thoroughly wipe the product with a soft cloth moistened with ammonia.

Using various purchased products cleaning products, do not leave them in contact with the surface for a long period of time, you must thoroughly rinse them with water after application after the time specified in the instructions.

Finally, it should be noted that the nickel-plated and chrome-plated surface should be cleaned as often as possible, without waiting for it to "grow" with dirt and oxidation, and then it will serve much longer.

How to clean inside

One option is to remove plaque with citric acid:

  1. The substance is filled with water.
  2. Fill the samovar and boil.
  3. Then left for 12 hours. During this time, plaque and scale will dissolve, and the copper samovar can be washed with water.

To clean the samovar inside, you can use finely chopped lemons instead of acid crystals, but they will need much more - 1 kg (5-6 pieces). This good method allows you to quickly restore the original state of the metal.

How to clean the outside

In the days of the USSR and earlier Tula samovars rid of soot with the help of river sand. But this method significantly harms the coating. Therefore, we consider a more gentle method.

You can clean an old copper samovar with a handmade mixture of coarse salt, vinegar and flour:

  1. You need to connect everything.
  2. Using a sponge, apply the composition to the outer surface of the samovar.
  3. After cleaning, use a cloth to polish the kitchen utensil to a shine.

In this way, it is possible to remove fat, soot, rust, soot from an antique samovar.

Tip: It is recommended to prepare the surface before cleaning. It is better to do this with the help of laundry soap (soap solution).

How to wash the surface

Perfectly cleans brass ammonia and oxalic acid. To do this, take 1 tbsp. ammonia or acid and pour 1 liter of water. With a solution, you need to clean the samovar, and a few minutes after that, wipe it with a sponge with soda to neutralize the effect of the acid. Then you should wash off the product, be sure to wipe the surface dry, then you can polish it.

How to get rid of plaque

To get rid of the raid, an old and proven Soviet method is used. It is necessary to put 1 kg of potato peelings in a container for boiling water and boil them. Then leave for 6 hours. Moisten a cloth with baking soda and wipe the walls with it. The method is also suitable for descaling inside an electric samovar.

How to clean the heater and inner walls

You can buy a teapot in the store. The main thing is that it was not for a dishwasher or washing machine. And it is very important to carefully follow the instructions so as not to spoil the device for boiling water.

External surface cleaning

The stainless steel is perfectly cleaned using household chemicals for the kitchen. You can use gels, powders. But you can never handle this inside.

Also, vinegar essence is perfect for cleaning. It is enough to moisten the samovar with acid, after which everything is well washed and wiped with a soft cloth.

Now it remains only to assemble a samovar. But drinking tea from it is not worth it yet: you need to boil water several times to exclude the presence of residues of cleaning products.

Tip: Before using a samovar, especially if it is antique, it is better to disinfect it. To do this, wipe all the parts of the device with a solution of potassium permanganate.
