If it is not possible to consult a doctor for medical assistance in case of a fracture, casting is performed at home. Properly applied gypsum will relieve the pain of a loved one, protect the wound from possible complications and allow you to delay a visit to the doctor without damage to health. To avoid mistakes when applying a plaster cast, it is enough to choose the right materials and follow certain rules.

How to apply gypsum without the help of a doctor?

The following materials are required for applying gypsum at home:

  • powder gypsum,
  • scissors,
  • bandages, gauze of various sizes, cotton wool,
  • warm water in a small basin.

Gypsum powder is added to water in a ratio of 1: 1. After mixing, check the rate of hardening of the mass. The quality of the gypsum will be optimal when forming a solid mass for 6 minutes without crumbling.

A wide bandage or gauze is rolled into a single layer and rubbed into a gypsum solution. Then the dressing material is rolled up in several layers and placed in a ready-made solution with a temperature just above the human body.

When the fabric is completely saturated, it is slightly squeezed. The dressing is now ready for use.

How to put gypsum on a hand?

In case of fractures of the upper extremities, the victim should take a stable position. The dressing does not compress the skin, but at the same time it should fit snugly over the entire surface.

Rules for applying gypsum to a hand:

1) the plaster cast is applied so that one edge is closed by each subsequent

2) timely folds formed,

3) bone protrusions are equalized using a layer of cotton wool,

4) not only the fracture area is bandaged, but also the adjacent areas,

5) drying takes about 25 minutes, during which the limb is completely immobilized,

6) it is not allowed that the hand, fingers acquire a bluish tint, you must not squeeze them.

After application, the gypsum should not cause discomfort. The edges of the gypsum dressing after drying can be trimmed so as not to cause discomfort to the victim.

How to put gypsum on the leg?

When plastering the legs, the same rules are used as for the hands. Before applying gypsum, you need to wash your legs, avoid getting dirt. The plaster cast dressing may be circular if applied to the knee joint. This type of dressing is used for open wounds when a small area remains visible.

Now you know how to apply gypsum at home, but it’s better to practice beforehand so that the skill appears.

For therapeutic immobilization, rigid plaster dressings are used. From plaster, you can apply a fixing bandage to any part of the body. For the manufacture of dressings use dry gypsum, without grains, the consistency of flour. Plaster bandages are prepared manually or by factory.

How to evaluate the quality of gypsum?

  • Gypsum powder in a brush and squeeze into a fist. If the gypsum is dry, it wakes up between the fingers; if wet, it forms a lump.
  • Mix one part of water and two parts of gypsum, pour into a tray and trace. Gypsum should harden for 6-7 minutes. The resulting gypsum plate should not crumble when pressed.
  • Plaster mixed with water does not smell rotten eggs.
  • Mix gypsum with water (water temperature 250C) and roll the ball from the resulting mass.
  • If the gypsum is of good quality, it freezes in 5-8 minutes and when it hits the floor it makes a metallic sound and does not collapse.

Sequencing

1. Wear special clothing: bathrobe, washable shoes, oilcloth apron, mask, gloves.
2. Put on a special table upholstered in metal or plastic, a container with gypsum.
3. Sift to prevent foreign bodies from entering.
4. Roll out a bandage 15-20 cm wide, 40-50 cm long.
5. Apply a thin layer of gypsum to the bandage.
5. Rub applied on bandages with a hand, shifting its excess.
7. Roll out the bandage further and apply gypsum to a length of 2-3 meters.
8. Collapse the loose gypsum portion of the bandage.
9. Store the bandage in a box in a dry place.

Note. Gypsum should be 2-3 meters long. With this length, the gypsum bandage gets wet well enough and is easy to use.

Device Description

This orthopedic product is a bandage made of durable polymeric materials. The main difference between plastic dressings and standard devices is their ease and ease of use, which enables the patient to lead a normal lifestyle without experiencing pain.

Modern plastic bandages can be used not only for the treatment of leg or arm fractures, but also in the case of serious injuries to the shoulder, ankle, foot or finger. Polymer gypsum provides reliable immobilization of the limb without loss of flexibility, which favorably affects the recovery process.

Types of fixtures

Among modern types of dressings distinguish:

Each type of product has its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as different materials.

It has low weight. The synthetic material from which the product is made allows air to constantly flow to the limb. To apply scotchcast, a doctor does not require a high level of skill or additional equipment, which distinguishes it from other polymer devices.

However, due to the roughness of the material, it is necessary to constantly use a cotton stocking for gypsum, which is the only but significant drawback.

The softcast product is more flexible, which allows it to be used to create flexible dressings for various stretches. The material is a polymeric fiberglass fabric impregnated with a polyurethane resin. This makes the product waterproof but breathable.

Most often, a softcast bandage is wrapped around an adhesive tape to ensure water resistance.

This type of plastic gypsum is distinguished by the uniqueness of the material represented by polyester fiber. It is completely hypoallergenic and has the following properties:

  • two types of stiffness determined by the orthopedist when applied,
  • high gas exchange due to the mesh structure,
  • favorable conditions for the “muscle pump”, which makes it possible to quickly remove puffiness,
  • absolute non-toxicity.

It is also worth saying that the primcast is quite inexpensive compared to its modern counterparts.

Turbocast is the most expensive among plastic gypsum. The material for the performance of the device is polycaprolactone. Absolute safety and ease of use allow it to be used for any type of fracture. Among the main advantages are:

  • water resistant
  • gas exchange
  • compatibility with radiography procedure,
  • modeling,
  • the ability to remove and put on the product yourself,
  • lack of age restrictions
  • complete safety of materials.

The disadvantages of turbocast are the high cost and complexity of applying polymer gypsum.

Advantages and disadvantages

Consider the main pros and cons of using plastic gypsum for fractures.

  • providing air access to an injured place,
  • comfortable wearing
  • you can swim in it,
  • tight fit around the entire perimeter of the limb,
  • giving any form
  • hypoallergenicity
  • the ability to take a shower and lead a normal lifestyle,
  • light weight
  • the possibility of applying plastic gypsum to the leg, arm or other injured area,

This tool also has disadvantages, such as:

  • muscle atrophy due to prolonged use,
  • the high cost of materials, installation and replacement,
  • the impossibility of notching the device in the place of compression.

Many patients are wondering which plastic or regular plaster is better.

Despite some disadvantages of using plastic dressings, their advantages over standard ones are quite weighty. For example, conventional orthopedic dressings do not allow a person to take a shower due to the destructibility of the material under the influence of water. The resulting crumbs soon cause itching and allergic lesions. Also, ordinary gypsum is very heavy and does not allow air to pass through, which slows down the process of repairing damaged tissues several times.

However, plastic products are much more expensive than conventional ones and require more skills from the doctor when applied.

Installation and removal

The methods of applying plastic gypsum directly depend on the type of dressing. For example, softcast, scotchcast and primcast require installation of a special stocking to provide a layer between the material and the skin. Turbocast is installed without additional devices, however, for its application it is necessary to carry out a number of temperature procedures.

Unfortunately, there are no ways to remove plastic dressings at home, since you need to use a special saw for this.

The procedure for installing and removing orthopedic appliances is completely painless.

average price

The cost of materials and overlay services depends on the type of device:

TitlePrice in rubles
