Slate roof repair: processing and extending the life of an old slate

There are several options for cleaning such a roof:

    mechanically, under high pressure.
First, approximately the upper half of the ramp is cleaned and switched to cleaned. Then continue cleaning in the direction of the edge of the ramp face forward. For a more even load distribution, it is advisable to use the ladders. This will help not to damage the sheets during the cleaning process. When washing and cleaning the roof, you must definitely use insurance.

Mechanical way

The main tool for mechanical cleaning of the asbestos-cement roof is a stiff brush made of metal. This the technology allows the preparation of damaged roofs for repair and does not require any special skills. The tool itself is inexpensive.

The essence of the work is to scrape off the moss from the surface of the sheets. They are performed in dry weather so as not to smear dirt. The task can be somewhat facilitated if the material is moistened with water. However, this method has certain disadvantages:

cleaning requires a lot of time and effort, insufficient quality of the result, low efficiency - about 10 m2 can be processed in 10-15 days, the outer layer of slate is destroyed, and hazardous asbestos dust is formed.

It is necessary to act with a power tool very carefully so as not to violate the integrity of weakened asbestos cement sheets.

After completion of the cleaning work, as a rule, garbage is formed. It is either swept away from the roof, or washed off with water from a hose, which simultaneously removes the remains of bird droppings.

Use of water under pressure

Pressure washing is the most efficient technology.

The best option is a water supply with a pressure of 250 atm. With more pressure, it is possible to damage the roof, and a jet with a lower pressure will not give the desired effect.

The surface of the roof begins to be cleaned, moving from the side of the ridge in strips towards the eaves. Their width is about half a meter. Typically, the distance from the hose tip to the roof during operation is approximately 30 cm. If the result is not satisfactory, this gap can be shortened.

After completing work on about half of the ramp, take a break so that the cleaned surface dries. The remaining part is cleaned by going to a dried area.

The length of the hose should be enough to handle the surface of the roof correctly - the direction of the water should be from top to bottom. This requirement is mandatory, otherwise moisture can penetrate under the roof covering, which can cause the roof to leak and, as a result, damage to the wooden frame.

The roof must be washed with extreme care. On wet moss and lichen you can easily slip, so you need to work, sitting on a dry stretch of slope.

Dry cleaning

Vegetation on the roof is removed with special preparations. In the old days, a strong saline solution was used for these purposes, today they have been replaced by chemical agents. They are applied through a spray. Large overgrown areas are pre-cleaned. Within half a day, the vegetation completely dies.

Fungal Treatment ↑

Fungus on slate, parasite spores deeply embedded in the pores, cleaned with antiseptic compounds. They are sold as concentrates, although ready-to-use solutions are also available. The solution is applied abundantly and evenly distributed over the surface with a brush. Any type of spray device can also be used.

When working with an antiseptic they follow safety measures and use personal protective equipment. The use of gloves, goggles and a respirator is a must.

The treated surface must be protected from moisture and precipitation until the applied product is completely dry.

For those who have recently covered their roof with slate or are going to do this, we note that it is better to withstand the new sheets for several months in the air and only then perform the described procedure. Then efflorescences will not appear on the material.

Cooking surface

First things first remove the overgrown layer of greenery from the roof. Choose a good sunny day when the slate and moss dry well and get to work. Main tool in this noble cause is hard brush with steel bristles, which can be found in any hardware store.

Patiently process slate to full cleanliness surface and gently remove all debris with a broom or scrub. For the inventive, this option is possible, but after you have to dry the roof:

Minor damage slate can be fixed independently by applying epoxy adhesive patch. Also, cracks can be covered with rubber crumb or slate scraps, which are then filled with sealant.

Why do cracks appear on the slate?

The reason for the appearance of cracks in the slate is commonplace - moisture penetrates in the sheet, when the temperature decreases, it freezes and increases in volume, thereby deforming the surface.

The procedures described below, regardless of the type of material applied, essentially have one purpose - formation of a protective and decorative coating, which isolates the slate from the aggressive effects of the external environment.

We put on a slate a protective and decorative layer

Famous grandfather way - This is the application of a cement-sand mortar on a slate. We prepare concrete to the consistency of thick sour cream, in which it will be convenient to apply, but the solution will not spread. Cover the entire area evenly roofing with a conventional whitewash brush.

We work with a brush along slate waves. Do not be lazy to stir the solution during operation, while maintaining its uniformity.

Cement coated slate is a good option to save the old roof, which now will serve more than one year. However, there are slightly more costly but preferred options for resuscitation of a time-worn asbestos sheet.

Cement mortar can be replaced by atmospheric bitumen paint or varnish.

Today, a huge amount has appeared on the shelves of construction hypermarkets specialized roofing paints. If you have a farm airbrush, then congratulations - routine work is now in the past:

Most durable and durable the layer will provide a coating based coal lacquers. The principle of operation is simple. Before painting, the surface is thoroughly cleaned, repaired, and if it is supposed to cover the slate with paint on oil basedthen applied to dry sheets layer of drying oil.

Before using, it is better to warm up the drying oil to 40 degrees. To do this, put the jar in pot of boiling water.

After the soil layer has dried, apply the paint at least 2 layer. If the attic is equipped as a living room, or the house does not have an attic at all, and the second floor is located directly under the roof, then to reduce the heating from hot sunlight bituminous varnish with the addition of aluminum powder.

Proportions these are:

First layer: 8,5 kg of varnish per 1,5 kg of powder.

Second layer: 8 kg of varnish per 2 kg of powder.

Slate protection against biological corrosion

You will most likely be offered a new-fangled tool in any hardware store. However, for the unpretentious we recall the way known since allied times: to protect the roof from the appearance of vegetation, use a five percent vitriol solution. It is divorced in water in the ratio 1:3 and applied with the first layer.

Next is preparing bitumen solution (on 1 bitumen part 3 parts of solvent) or oil paint is applied.
