Instructions for updating the iPhone

Dear readers, today I will tell you how to have to be perverted in order to get around the file upload limit set on the iPhone when using mobile Internet. Prior to iOS 11 firmware, using cellular data, it was possible to download a file of no more than 100 MB. How to install the application more than 100 MB, we told - here, bypass the new limit of 150 MB. it turned out - like this.

With the release of iOS 11 firmware, Apple has changed the restrictions on downloading files on the mobile network, increasing the limit. Now using mobile Internet you can download files no more than 150 MB. But this is not enough even for a modest firmware upgrade.

For example, in our test iPhone 7 firmware 11.0.2 is installed, and in order to update the phone’s iOS to 11.1, you need to download 306 MB, which is an excess of the limit for downloading on a mobile network.

If you try to update the iOS firmware, on the iPhone having a connection only to the mobile Internet (3G or LTE), then in the Settings (General - Software Update) the Download and Install button will be inactive, it will be grayed out. And below the inscription:

This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection.

Since at the time of this writing, we are almost in the field, we do not have the ability to find a wired unlimited Wi-Fi access point and quietly update the firmware. Therefore, we found a couple of alternative solutions that may someday come in handy for you.

Method 1. Find a second iPhone with mobile Internet

  1. We find an iPhone user who also wants to update iOS firmware using only mobile Internet
  2. We turn on the modem mode in his phone, we distribute it, thus his mobile Internet via Wi-Fi
  3. In your iPhone, go to Settings - Wi-Fi, turn on Wi-Fi and select a friend’s phone in the list, connect to his access point
  4. After you have connected via Wi-Fi to another phone with mobile Internet, you can update iOS on your own: Settings - General - Software Update - the Download and Install button becomes active.

After updating iOS, you are distributing your mobile Internet to update the firmware of your friend’s friend’s iPhone and everyone is happy.

Method 2. Find a laptop or MacBook

The situation is as follows, we could not find the iPhone in the vicinity for updating the firmware, but since there was a working laptop nearby, the idea came of distributing Internet to it using a USB cable. Then launch iTunes on the laptop and update iOS using it.

  1. Turn on iPhone modem mode
  2. We connect the iPhone and laptop with a USB cable, if there is no cable, you can try to connect via Wi-Fi
  3. We start the iTunes program, press the button with the iPhone image (1), select the Browse section (2) and click the Update button (3)

If you have an unlimited mobile Internet tariff, you can continue, and the firmware of your iPhone will be updated.

But we, at that time, had about 1 GB of mobile traffic left, and iTunes displays the iOS update volume of 2.5 GB, I don’t know why there is such a huge difference, because in the iPhone Software Update itself, the update size is 306 MB . In general, we stopped the process of downloading firmware in iTunes and decided to look for another solution.

All of today's instructions can be used not only to update iOS firmware, but also to download objects larger than 100 or 150 MB. That is, any applications, podcasts, etc.

It turned out that if there is a MacBook in the vicinity, then you can give him mobile Internet from your iPhone, then turn on the MacBook’s Internet distribution, connect to it using a different communication protocol and update the firmware.

In our case described below, we will connect the iPhone to the MacBook, distribute the Internet to this Mac, and then distribute the Internet with the Mac’s back to the iPhone, but via the Wi-Fi network, and update the firmware, these are the praises:

  1. We connect to the MacBook (the operating system at that time - Sierra 10.12.5) iPhone using a native USB cable (if not native, then use certified cables).
  2. In iPhone, turn on the modem mode and select - USB only
  3. As soon as the Internet appears in the MacBook (this can be checked in the Safari browser), launch the Mac OS bottom dock System Preferences and select the Sharing icon
  4. In the sharing settings, in the services, click on - Shared Internet (1), in the General Connection section, select - iPhone USB (2), Ports, check Wi-Fi (3)
  5. If you intend to often use the described scheme, you need to go to Wi-Fi Settings, select the WPA2 Personal security protocol and enter the password below twice that will protect the connection. We skip point 5, because we will not use this connection constantly.
  6. Now you need to check the box Shared Internet (4) and in the window that appears turn on Wi-Fi (5) confirm - Enable.

That's it, Internet distribution with the MacBook is turned on, launch the Settings app - Wi-Fi - turn on Wi-Fi and select the MacBook in the list of networks. Now, using such a ring connection, you can go to Settings - General - Software Update - Download and install the new iOS firmware on your iPhone.

Such a connection can be used not only when updating, but also to bypass the restriction when downloading any files exceeding 150 MB.

Some also mark this operation as a system update, although I would call it a firmware return or restore. Check how this is done using a computer.

The first thing on your PC naturally should be the firmware file. This is apparently a saved file from previous updates or a file downloaded from one of the sites.

The procedure itself is similar to the previous one, you connect the iPhone to the PC and wait until iTunes detects your smartphone, click on the phone icon. The device control panel opens. Here, instead of the “Refresh” item, select the next “Restore” next to it.

Next, select the downloaded firmware file and start the firmware process by clicking "Open", accept the license agreement and after about 5-10 minutes, the iPhone will reboot and be ready to work. Here is the complete instruction on how to flash iPhone

Regardless of how the update is installed — using iTunes or wirelessly — after the process is complete, the amount of free space on the device will not change.

Some iOS updates cannot be installed wirelessly. Connecting through a VPN or proxy server may interfere with the device’s communication with the iOS operating system update servers.

Devices with iOS 12 can be updated automatically. To enable automatic updates, go to Settings> General> Software Update> Auto Update. The latest version of iOS will be automatically installed on your device. Some updates may need to be installed manually.
