For the start-up screen and metro applications to work fully in windows 8, a screen resolution of at least 1024x768 is required, but many netbooks and tablets have screens with a resolution of not more than 1024x600 ... To solve this problem, you need to change only a few keys in the registry.
Namely, you need to change the registry keys:
To change the settings you need to run the registry editor - winkey + R - regedit.
Search ctrl + F for each parameter and change all 0 to 1.
Each parameter is repeated several times, so after changing 0 to 1, you should search further by pressing f3 until the search indicates that nothing else can be found.
After all the changes, you should restart the computer, go to the desktop and change the screen resolution to any available and comfortable, but no less than 1024x768.
Statistics of the use of operating systems in November 2013
Let's see if my particular decision coincided with global trends. Earlier this month, computer and news publications, such as cnet.com, published statistics on the use of operating systems in the world for November 2013.
The basis for these publications was material provided by a well-known analytical company. NetApplications.
In my opinion, it is possible to comment on the results presented with one single phrase - all the same, all in the same place. Operating systems Windows the company Microsoft totally owned
91% So periodically distributed from the camp of adherents of the operating system Linux, whose share, by the way, last month accounted for 1.56% of the OS market, statements in the style of “Microsoft must die” cause, perhaps, a smile. She will die a very long time and, it seems, happily.
Moreover. Microsoft and she herself would like to quickly “kill” one of her operating systems. It’s clear that we are talking about Windows XP. In April 2014, support for this OS should cease. Interestingly, they will really stop, or renew again, as it was already? After all, a 12-year-old XP works on a third of all world computers.
In the context of this article, we are interested in the tandem Windows 8 + Windows 8.1. As expected, after the release Windows 8.1transition to which for legal users Windows 8 provided free of charge, the share of 8 has decreased, and the share of 8.1 has increased by about the same amount. It can be assumed that in the foreseeable future, the previous OS will almost leave the horizon.
But what personally turned out to be some surprise for me was the fact that the total share of these OSs over the past month has not changed much and amounts to 9.3%. It seemed to me that the process of transition to Windows 8 / 8.1 going on a bit more actively. It turns out that my step towards the latest operating system Microsoft has not yet matched the preferences of other users Windows.
Features netbook eMachines eM250
What might be of interest to my installation? The fact is that, as the “first swallow”, of course, we chose not the main working desktop, but a small and no longer a new netbook eMachines eM250.
Between vacation trips, it is used by me, for the most part, in the supine position. That is, when you don’t have the strength to sit at a large computer, but you still need to look or do something. At the same time, I must say that after the appearance in my household of a very light and nimble tablet Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5110 I began to use this netbook even less often.
In terms of installation Windows 8.1 This netbook is notable for the fact that its screen resolution is only 1024 x 600. This is below the minimum resolution. 1024 x 768 for start Modern applications. Therefore, they will not work. So let's see if it is possible to install Windows 8.1 on such a computer, how it will look and whether it will be comfortable to do anything on it.
Netbook Features eMachines eM250
|Model||ACER E-Mashines EM250|
|CPU||Intel® Atom ™ N270 (1.60 GHz / 512KB / FSB 533)|
|Memory||2048 Mb, DDR2|
|Screen||10.1 ″ SD (WSVGA), 1024 × 600|
|Video system||Intel® GMA 950 (shared)|
The netbook was purchased with 1024 MB RAM and Windows XP. After increasing the RAM to 2048 MB, it was installed on it Windows 7 Professional. I can’t say that she flew - a netbook, it is a netbook, but it worked quite properly and adequately.
I usually always do a clean install Windowsbut this time I decided to try to install Windows 8.1 as an update Windows 7. To be honest, the probability of a rollback seemed so high that it was just too lazy to reinstall all applications from scratch and engage in the transfer of data and settings.
Install Windows 8.1 on top of Windows 7
Before the installation process, a full backup of the system was made and a bootable USB Flash disk (flash drive) with a distribution kit was recorded Windows 8.1.
In fact, with the chosen installation method, a bootable USB flash drive is not required. You only need the distribution files deployed from the iso image to disk or external media. Since the main operation in preparing the bootable USB flash drive is to write the necessary files to it, I did not become smart and just made the bootable USB flash drive with Windows 8.1.
In order to install Windows 8.1 on top of an existing system, in this case Windows 7, load the computer as usual and in the user session run as administrator “Setup”From prepared media with distribution files.
If you are sure that there will be access to the Internet from this computer during the installation process, then it makes sense to choose the recommended option.
After checking for updates, the installation program will be restarted and the license terms must be accepted on the next screen. Put a tick in front of “I accept the terms of the license”And click“To accept”.
I wonder how many people really read these conditions?
The next screen will prompt you to choose whether to save files.
Further installation will begin Windows 8.1 on top of the existing system. On a dead netbook with a leisurely hard drive (5400rpm), the process took a lot of time. In this case, the computer rebooted several times. In the end, I left him alone and just went about other things. Whatever it was, but the prospect of immediately getting a finished computer, that is, with all the necessary programs and data, was worth it.
I must say that in the final analysis I have absolutely no complaints about the installation process itself. At the final stage, I agreed to immediately link my local account to the account Microsoft. This is not necessary, although the refusal is not very obvious.
After completing the process and starting Windows 8.1 all previously installed programs were not only in place, but also worked properly. The exception at the first moment was only an antivirus Avg and iTunes. Avg instantly updated and earned, iTunes I subsequently reinstalled.
Keep in mind that with this installation method, a large number of system files are saved in the system - “Previous Windows installations" In my case, they accumulated about 10 GB. Those who have a boot partition with basic files Windows small, you need to keep this in mind. You can delete these files in the same way as update files. You can read about it here.
Configuring the Windows 8.1 Interface
Lead interface Windows 8.1 to the familiar look was extremely simple.
My Desktop “Moved” from 7 almost unchanged. Only widgets disappeared. Now this information is displayed on home screen and on the panelswonder buttons”.
Navigation Bar Settings
In order to download Windows 8.1 carried out immediately on the desktop, open “Control Panel”(From the“Applications”, From the menu, right-click on“Start”Or“Win + x”) –> “Taskbar and navigation” –> “Navigation”:
Celebrate “When you log in and close all applications, open the desktop ...”.
Additionally remove “When you hover over the upper right corner, show charms”- we talked about this at the beginning of the article.
Customizing the Applications view
Since on a netbook with a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 Modern applications don't work, push them away. To do this, we mark the lowest point “When sorting ... the first to display classic applications" Delete at all Modern applications I will not, as there is the opportunity to connect an external monitor to the netbook.
Let's see how the screen now looks “Applications”:
As expected, the classic applications first settled down.
In addition to sorting by category, three more options are possible:
If you select “By name”, Then in fact the“ open ”menu“Start” –> “All programs” Windows 7. Two other options, I think, can not comment.
If you switch to the setup mode (by right-clicking), then in the “Applications”You can configure its presence for any particular application (fixing) on the home screen and on the taskbar. And remove attachment, open in new window, run as administrator or open file location.
Home screen setup
Last of all, let's move on to setting up home screen. In the previous step, in the “Applications”, We determined the programs that should be present on the home screen. Now it remains only to remove unnecessary, which again includes tiles of idle Modern applications and sort them according to your preference.
It looks like this in Windows 8.1 home screen “Start”Described netbook. In fact, it is nothing but “favorites”.
Switching on the right mouse button to the setup mode, you can unpin app from home screen and taskbar, open in new window, run as administrator, open file location and resize tiles application.
Application tiles can be moved to different parts of the screen and grouped. Application groups can be given arbitrary names according to their own ideas.
For Modern applications the set of features will be slightly different. In particular, you can enable or disable living tiles, that is, the output of updated information from the application in the corresponding tile.
Perhaps that’s all from the interface settings - it’s very simple and fast.
You can also mention that the “Start”Returned the familiar ability to control the shutdown of a computer and end a user session. Now you don’t need to “catch” the “charms” panel by moving the mouse cursor to the lower right corner of the screen. You can immediately open the context menu of the “Start”, Which is called by right-clicking or the combination of“Win + x”, And select the necessary action in it.
Wallpaper for the desktop and the home screen, which are included by default Windows 8.1I think not everyone will like it. Fortunately, interesting options can be immediately downloaded from the Internet.
General Considerations for UI Changes in Windows 8.1
If you perform all the simple settings described above, then being on the desktop you can easily forget that it is Windows 8.1, but not Windows 7.
Well, maybe there are no widgets and some effects Aero - they were disconnected back in Windows 8 in order to save system resources and battery power. In fact Microsoft could provide an opportunity to decide on whether to use transparency Aero glass users themselves.
If transparency of application windows is important for comfortable operation, it can be returned, for example, using the AeroGlass for Windows 8 utility.
If you ask how many times during my, as yet short-lived, work on a netbook with Windows 8.1 I regretted the lack of the usual menu “Start”, Then I will answer - not once.
I don’t know how others, but personally, as it turned out, I used it to launch applications extremely rarely. All programs of “everyday demand” are placed on my taskbar. She survived in Windows 8.1 unchanged. Switching between running applications is similar.
As for working, but less frequently used programs, I have long ago created their shortcuts in the “thematic” folders on the desktop, for example, “Web”, “Utils” or “Photo & Cinema”, and run them from there. Thus, the tiles (icons) of applications sorted into groups on the initial screen turned out to be just what you need.
To launch the application from the start screen in Windows 8.1 you need to make two clicks with the mouse. This is one less than when starting from folders on the desktop Windows 7 (in most cases, the first click will be to minimize open windows).
Comparative evaluation of application launch time
In conclusion, I will present the results of a simple comparison of the speeds of the most popular applications on the described netbook exclusively by the time they were launched. These results can in no way be taken as any serious testing. At the same time, they are able to give some, though very superficial, representation.
Let's start with the disk space. We can say that it has not changed - 32, 3 GB in Windows 7, 32.4 GB Windows 8.1.
The results presented in the table require explanation.
The first shows the operating system boot time. When evaluating it with a timer in your hands, it’s quite difficult to determine what to consider as the time the download is complete. For Windows 7 as such, I accepted the appearance of two widgets on the desktop, for Windows 8.1, in which there are no more applications in the tray. This, of course, is very arbitrary.
So the gain in 30 seconds for Windows 8.1 actually can be much more modest. Although, a reduction in download time was promised Microsoft and it, as it were, worked out.
For comparison of browsers in each of them five sites were opened: yandex.ru, tv.yandex.ru, www.ithabits.ru, ria.ru, ru.msn.com. Their set was taken completely randomly. Browsers have been configured to reopen pages on saved bookmarks at startup. It was timed until the completion of the download of all sites.
I will not focus on the deterioration of browser time Yandex for 20 seconds in Windows 8.1. With such an approximate measurement method, this can be a mistake (although, I just tried it several times and again got two minutes).
On almost all devices, including tablets, I use a browser Google chrome. But some time ago (back in Windows 7) on this netbook, he practically refused to work.
As I understand it, after the next update, he had a certain problem in communicating with his own cache. Google chrome once refuses to open previously downloaded pages - “gets stuck” and does not show the page at all. Reinstalling the browser for a while saves, but then the defect reappears.
I wrote a letter describing the problem in Googlebut so far nothing has changed.
This is due to the forced, I hope that a temporary transition to the browser Yandex.
And here are the results demonstrated by the new Internet Explorer 11 truly impressive. In this test, he won an unconditional victory. It’s a pity that there are no add-ons often used by me, such as, for example, Evernote web clipper and Evernote clearly and it’s not possible to sync bookmarks with computers on Linux.
In order to finish with browsers, I must say that on the same netbook, a second operating system is installed on the virtual disk - Joli OS 1.2. This operating system Linux still boots fine from the virtual disk and in Windows 8.1. Since the netbook is “offsite”, I installed a second OS for insurance in case of any troubles with the main system. Plus I also take with me a bootable USB flash drive (aka Live CD) with its distribution kit.
To my great regret, not so long ago from developers Joli os A notification came that the project was closed. That is, the long-awaited version of this system - 1.3 will no longer appear. Very sorry. An interesting project was. Only the Web component will be supported and developed now - Jolicloud.
A similar measurement of the reopening time of five selected sites in the environment Joli OS 1.2 in browser Chomium showed a result even slightly better than that of Internet Explorer 11 - about 35 seconds. I don’t hint at anything or call for anything, just for information.
At the end of the download Google earth conditionally, the completion of the approximation and drawing of the details of the globe was accepted. It can be assumed, that Windows 8.1 works slightly better with DirectX.
All applications Microsoft demonstrated absolute stability and constancy.
- Changes made to the operating system interface Windows 8.1 provide comfortable work on a desktop computer with a traditional monitor, including the style Windows 7,
- Installation Windows 8.1 to a computer with a screen resolution less 1024 x 768 possible however Modern applications will not start.
Feasibility of an immediate update Windows 7 before Windows 8.1 on a desktop computer or laptop as a whole is not yet so obvious. But update Windows 8 definitely worth it.
However, everyone should decide for himself. Personally, I leave on my netbook Windows 8.1.
About installing on the same netbook Windows 10 Technical Preview can be read in a new article.
