Chromecast, Google’s compact solution for streaming Chrome’s videos, music, photos, and tabs to your TV. But there are more functional devices. One of them will be discussed in this article. Meet: Roku 3.
Roku 3 is a small device with dimensions 8.9 × 8.9 × 2.5 cm. It is intended for viewing films, photographs and online TV, as well as in order to listen to music. Externally, the device looks very simple - a black box with a barely noticeable number 3 on the top cover. At the back there are: a power connector, Ethernet, HDMI and a microSD card slot. There is a USB 3.0 port on the right. And it’s not by chance here - it’s most convenient to connect external hard drives regardless of the location of Roku (on the wall or just on the table).
Options Roku 3
Together with the device itself, the buyer also receives a control panel. It does not work through the usual IR receiver, but through Wi-Fi Direct. This allows you to use the remote control while Roku is out of sight, for example, on a wall behind a TV or even in a closet. An accelerometer is built into the control panel, so that it can also play the role of a kind of game manipulator for Angry Birds or many other toys.
Headphones are also included. It is interesting that they are connected to the control panel: after that, the sound on the TV stops playing and automatically switches to them. By the way, the volume buttons on the PU change the sound level only in the headphones, so if you want to turn down or turn up the sound TV during movie playback, you have to look for a remote control from the TV.
As for watching movies and TV shows directly, Roku offers over 750 online channels. True, they are all American and many are available only by paid subscription. Therefore, Roku in Russia is hardly suitable for online TV. Only YouTube saves, and even then it’s not completely - officially there is no such application or channel, you have to use add-ons like VideoBuzz.
Be that as it may, Roku can connect to the Internet. And I must! There is an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi b / g / n for this. Although the device is not equipped with internal memory, it has a microSD slot and a USB port. In the first case, you can record several HD movies, but with USB the situation is already more interesting. Since Roku uses the fast standard 3.0, an external hard drive of any size is connected to the port and a full FullHD video is already "broadcast" from it. Although there was a fly in the ointment - if you have an external hard drive with a collection of films, you can watch movies through Roku only in MP4 and MKV formats, listen to music in AAC and MP3, and only JPG and PNG are available for photos.
PC streaming is possible thanks to Wi-Fi and applications like Tonido or Plex. We talked about them in more detail in our Chromecast article.
For user convenience, there are applications for]]> iOS]]> and]]> Andro>]]>. Are there any need for them in the Russian user? Perhaps someone will be able to control Roku from a phone more conveniently than from a remote control. However, the main advantage is a quick search on TV channels thanks to the smartphone keyboard - most likely, the Russian consumer will not need it.

If the set-top box has a more fully functional app store, we would like to see it. Roku may not have literally everything, but it is as close as possible.
To this end, Roku boasts more than 4,500 channels, ranging from streaming pylons such as Netflix, HBO and Vudu, to the obscure - in fact there is a station called “Firewood Hoarders”, so finding something to watch is rarely a problem.
For American viewers, there are all big names here: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO and Youtube and Crunchyroll, Plex and Pandora and Spotify. You can rent and buy individual films and television through Vudu and Fandango, the last of which is a de facto streamer rental. If you are located in the UK and decide to get a Roku Streaming Stick from overseas, check out Sky’s Now TV (Sky's shareholder of Roku), Netflix, and Demand 5.
Audio applications include Rdio, Pandora, Vevo, and Spotify. However, unlike the PlayStation Music on the PS4, the latter requires a premium subscription to get anywhere. This barrier to entry makes Roku one of our least favorite music streaming platforms, losing ground for Google’s new favorite, Chromecast Audio.
New this year is the Twitter app, which broadcasts content from the Twitter live channel and includes sports broadcasts, live gigs and video games. It is worth checking out.
However, before we get down to performance, we need to talk about the Roku interface for one second. He is almost unchanged from the very beginning and now, after several years in his life, he begins to worry a little.
Don't get us wrong: the interface has stood the test of time. It is persistent, menacing even. It is easy to use, and the content, of course, does not disappear anywhere. But at some point it does not hurt to have some kind of visual flair.
It's hard to say which streaming box is the fastest these days. If you use Chromecast Ultra, the new Amazon Fire TV, or any number of the aforementioned Roku boxes, they will all download the video at about the same time. At the same time, there are time differences that are necessary for navigating the interface, but by and large, when it comes to performance, we probably reached a peak in fast loading times.
Now there are two very important caveats regarding performance. Firstly, because the Roku Ultra is a 4k HDR streaming device, you really need to own and use 4K HDR TV. That sounds silly, and yet there will be many people who buy the Roku Ultra, expecting 4K HDR performance on a 1080p TV. Trust us, it is.
The second caveat is that you will need a decent router and connection speed. Roku (and almost any other streaming device) recommends a speed of 15 Mbps. This is not a high download speed in 2017, but it is a decisive factor in ensuring playback without delay.
What happens when you remove the bar from both of these requirements? Solid, consistent 4K HDR unlimited streaming is arguably one of the clearest we've seen in the streaming box. Quantifying how much better Ultra is than Premiere + or 4 is not easy. Even comparing them side by side, it’s hard to say that buffering is actually better. Of course, the difference in image quality is more significant - especially between non-HDR Roku 4 and HDR Roku Ultra.
Pack Ultra vs Roku 3, Roku 2, Rooku streaming stick or Roku expresshowever, the Roku Ultra will come out as a clear winner.
On a more technical level, Roku Ultra supports H.264 / AVC, H.265 / HEVC, VP9 video codecs and AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC, PCM, AC3 / EAC3, DTS, ALAC audio codecs. Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list of everything, but the most popular codecs are present and considered. Roku Ultra also supports Google Cast video streaming, not the codec as such, but definitely a useful feature when you have a few friends who want to share their favorite YouTube clip.
The last thing to stop here is how the Roku Ultra dissipates heat or rather does not dissipate it. This was a problem that we discovered on Roku 4 when we reviewed this a few years ago, and the situation did not seem to improve with Ultra.
Watch a show or two on Ultra and you will feel a tangible warmth coming out of the device. Stream for hours and the Roku Ultra will actually be hot to the touch. In the short term, there is nothing to worry about - it is, of course, not hot enough to burn you or set your house on fire, but it definitely confuses the long-term health of the product.
Roku is still an exclusively egalitarian streaming television set-top box. It doesn't matter if you choose Netflix over Amazon or Vudu over Hulu. He doesn't want to sell you an Rdio subscription, and if you join YouTube Red, you don't care. The all-new Roku device takes care of accessing the content you want using the most affordable means. This is entertainment on your terms, the embodiment of the movement of the rope. But the Roku Ultra is probably the best device Roku has ever made - even if it's not much better than the Roku Premiere +.
We did not like
Although the Roku Ultra does not have many flaws, some of them deserve attention. There is currently no Dolby Vision support - a problem if you invest heavily in Vudu or you have a TV that supports the highest version of HDR - and Roku Ultra is struggling to differentiate itself from its younger brother Premiere +. It also has problems with heat dissipation, even if it does not affect performance.
The Roku Ultra is an excellent streaming device - perhaps the best in life. This has a few minor issues (see: heat dissipation and lack of Dolby Vision support), but the biggest problem hitting the Roku top box is that it is very similar in performance to both Roku Premiere + and Roku 4 .
If you do not mind paying premium for top-level equipment, Roku Ultra is for you. However, if you want to save a little without losing performance, it’s better to spend your money on the 30-cheap Roku Premiere +.
