Of course, an automatic transmission is much easier to drive than mechanics. However, a person who has mastered the manual transmission well will be able to get full control of the car, save fuel and get a lot of positive emotions from acceleration. But before you start moving, you need to learn how to move. At first glance, it seems that it is very easy, in fact it is not. So, how to get started on a car with a manual gearbox.
First you need to insert the key into the ignition, but in no case do not turn it. Before this, several useful actions must be done to avoid unpleasant consequences.. Pay attention to the three pedals located under the feet. On the left is the clutch pedal, which is necessary to break the mechanical connection between the engine and gearbox. On the right is the accelerator pedal, or, as they call it, the gas pedal. In the middle is a brake. Regardless of which side of the car’s steering wheel is, the order of the pedals in all cars is always the same.
Before starting, make sure that the wheels do not start rotation with the engine.
To do this, depress the clutch pedal all the way, then engage neutral gear. The characteristic free movement of the lever to the left and to the right will serve as evidence of this. Thus, the connection of the wheels with the power plant is broken and spontaneous start of movement is excluded when the starter is turned on.
If the hand brake does not do its job well, squeeze the brake pedal all the way. The fact is that when the wheels lose contact with the engine, nothing holds them and the car can roll freely, which means that if the car is on a slope, it can suddenly start moving. That is why it is recommended to first apply the brake, and then the clutch.
The next step is to turn on the starter. If it happens in warm weather, a neutral gear will be enough, but if the engine is started in cold weather, then squeeze the clutch without fail to break the connection between the engine and manual transmission. It is likely that the oil in the transmission is frozen and in order to crank it, you need more energy, which is unlikely to be obtained from a cold machine. Therefore, making sure that the starter will only rotate the engine, you can turn on the starter.
When starting the engine in first gear with the clutch pressed out, you cannot throw it, otherwise the car will make a jerk forward and die out, since you will sharply turn on the gearbox. Therefore, hold the clutch until neutral is engaged or you start moving.
How to get started on the mechanics
So, you started the engine, the gearshift lever is in the neutral position. Now is the time to find out how to start the movement. To do this, the clutch is squeezed to the stop and the first or reverse gear is engaged. It depends on which direction you are going to go. Now the most difficult and crucial moment - you need to smoothly release the clutch and gradually press the gas pedal, catching the moment when the car starts. It is worth paying attention to the fact that this needs to be done quickly, but as smoothly as possible, to prevent jerking or accidental engine stop.
Many drivers, having felt their car to the end, release the clutch until the moment when the revolutions become less stable, and start off at idle, adding gas only after the car fully starts driving at a speed of at least 5-10 kilometers per hour. Others do not add gas at all and do it only after they completely release the clutch. Despite all the factors, this pedal should always be released smoothly at any shift, except when the gearshift lever is in the neutral position.
There are two points:
- You released the clutch too fast and the car stalled. This is normal, but learning how to smoothly move it from the place will not work the first time. The explanation is quite simple - having received a sudden connection with the wheels, the engine does not have time to untwist them and stops.
- We started to move smoothly, but with high engine speeds. Too much pressure on the gas is also not worth it, as this has a bad effect on the friction part of the clutch disc, which means that soon you will have to change it.
How to get up the hill
This is a very complex process that is practiced every day in a driving school. The fact is that here you need to prevent the car from rolling back, since there may be some kind of obstacle or another car behind, but it also needs to move very quickly so as not to stall. Experienced drivers can do this without the handbrake. You are advised to start with the hand brake.
To practice, find a not very steep slope and stop. Put the car on a manual brake, put on the first gear and untwist the engine to 1500 turns. Start releasing the clutch gently with one hand on the handbrake handle. As soon as the speed starts to fall, and the car is about to start moving, it's time to quickly release the handbrake and add gas. Daily practice will do its job, and gradually you will be able to do this without the handbrake.
Clutch - the main problem of the driver in a car with manual transmission
Manual transmission requires independent clutch control. To do this, there is a special pedal, which is responsible for mixing and connector discs, ensuring the joint operation of the gearbox and engine. In fact, releasing the clutch pedal, we allow the torque from the power unit to reach the wheels of the car. It is in this part that most of the questions arise about how to get started on the mechanics.
At the moment when you release the clutch in order to move off, one of the disks of this unit is spinning. Therefore, sharp contact cannot be allowed; all actions must be carried out smoothly. Abrupt throwing of the clutch pedal leads to the following troubles:
- the car starts to twitch, it is impossible to control it at this moment,
- the engine often stalls after a few convulsions,
- there is noticeable wear on the gearbox, clutch and the engine itself,
- at the crossroads such actions can cause unpleasant situations.
That is why many are interested in the question of how to get started in the manual transmission, so as not to harm your car and the surrounding transport. Many buyers of expensive foreign cars on the mechanics believe that in foreign cars there are no such clutch throwing symptoms, but these rules apply to all cars equipped with a manual gearbox. Of course, many cars will not stall after such an action, but it is impossible to call their behavior normal at the time of a sharp release of the clutch pedal.
This problem is becoming the main cause of small accidents on the roads of large cities. Despite the lack of experience with some drivers, traffic in such cities is dynamic, they do not suffer long downtimes.
The process of starting a trip with a manual gearbox
In a driving school, all practice lessons begin with a description of the trip process. It is important to understand and understand the algorithm for shifting gears, the sequence of pressing the pedals and other parameters the first time.
The process of starting a movement on a car with mechanics is quite simple, but it takes a little experience to complete it without effort and labor. In general, driving a car is as follows:
- the driver must sit on the seat, adjust all controls and visions for himself, and also fasten his seat belt,
- then it is necessary to start the engine, warm it up to working revolutions,
- then you need to depress the clutch and brake pedals while releasing the hand brake,
- engage first gear using the manual transmission lever,
- release the brake pedal and gradually release the clutch pedal,
- as soon as you feel a slight push, the car starts moving, you need to hold the clutch pedal a little in this position,
- on some cars (old carburetor) it is necessary to give high speed to the engine using the gas pedal,
- then you can smoothly release the clutch pedal completely and adjust the speed with the gas pedal.
When shifting gears, delaying the clutch in the area of its contact does not make sense. You just need to smoothly perform any manipulations with this pedal, not to rush and not be nervous, especially in the initial stage of your practice.
Somewhat harder to get started when the car is on a slope. In this case, you will have to start releasing the clutch pedal while the brake is depressed. As soon as the clutch begins to come into contact, you need to quickly move your foot from the brake pedal to the gas and gradually increase the speed. Otherwise, the vehicle will roll back and may touch other vehicles or run into an obstacle.
It is the wrong start of movement on a car that often causes many troubles on the roads. For this, the traffic police recommend marking the cars on which the driver is traveling without sufficient experience with a special designation with the letter “U”. If problems arise, this will make others understand that an inexperienced driver is driving, which will cause a more favorable attitude to errors.
Learning to get started on a car with mechanics is better in a territory closed to other vehicles. If you start training on a busy road, you will have to cope with the stress and constant pressure of other drivers, which will greatly complicate the process of obtaining the necessary skills.
