Which of us does not dream about own house? So that no one behind the wall makes noise, doesn’t stomp on top, doesn’t bully at the entrance ... His house with a piece of land (even a small one) is such a pleasure!
So it was with us. When it became possible to choose whether to buy an apartment with a larger area or a private house with a plot, and to sell a summer house, we chose three months. We traveled around the whole city (fortunately, it’s small), looking at options for apartments, then finished houses.
And everywhere there were some flaws that did not suit us: either the layout of the apartment, or the area (used to living in the center), or the foundation of the house is unreliable ...
Finally, one of the friends, learning about our problem, categorically stated that it is better to build a house yourself. “Buy a ready-made housing and then you will still rebuild it for yourself more than one year. He was convinced by his own example, ”he convinced us.
We never even thought about it. But the idea seemed tempting. And we directed all our energy to find a land for sale where I wanted, and develop a project for my future home.
We were very lucky with the site: they saw an advertisement in the newspaper and agreed quickly with the landlady. True, its area was very small: only about four hundred parts. Therefore, the house had to be designed in two levels, so that it took up little space.
We learned that the project does not have to be ordered from specialist architects. Well, it began ... It took more than a month to discuss different options, to get acquainted with finished projects on the Internet.
Finally decided, and now I can give some advice, how to start designing your own home:
- It’s necessary to think over how and where on your site will your home be located. How much space will take, which side is better to leave under the garden, vegetable garden. We intuitively did the right thing: the sunny side was left for landings. Or maybe it just so happened that we just started building on the site of an old tumble-down house that was once put up by smart people ...
- To calculate how large should the house be. We have it small. Firstly, the plot is small. Secondly, we are future pensioners, and utilities are not very cheap.
- When designing a project, you need to keep in mind such details as the arrangement of rooms in relation to the cardinal points. It is more reasonable to place residential areas with windows to the south or south-west, and sleeping areas to the southeast. It is not necessary that the sun shine there in the evening: it will be hot in summer. Well, of course, you do not need to place the windows on one side. I was so happy for the first time after the introduction that I can look “on all four sides” and that the sun shines in the house all day: from one window to another. It's so cool! Especially after a two-room apartment in a five-story building. Although we had it on two sides ... But not four!
So, the first step is to create a sketch. It is not necessary to be an artist, to be able to draw well. We did it easier: we developed a project for our future home, also in Microsoft Excel. Here's what we got:
The masons were then given exactly this plan. They understood everything. Did not complain.
What did we try to take into account? We wanted to combine the kitchen with the living room, so that while I was preparing lunch and dinner, my husband was there. After all, they are at this time, usually where are they? That's right, at the TV! So we combined these two zones. And very pleased with the result.
The kitchen block is very small, but I do not need one more. But there is a dining room and a relaxation area with a sofa and a TV! Overall very spacious.
Downstairs, we also located a bathroom with access to the sauna, which is still being equipped.
The entrance hall, unfortunately, turned out to be small. Here I insisted on this: retirement age was ahead, and the heating (supposedly central) in our city was simply “golden”. This is where the mistake that I hinted at happened: it was difficult to put up the stairs later. Of course, we thought about it at the stage of the project, but didn’t calculate everything, didn’t read what was necessary for its proper arrangement.
It turned out not so bad, but still I would like it to start not from the entrance itself. During the internal arrangement on the go, I had to change the location of the entry to the stairs - it did not pass, as it was in the project, in reality.
But what I thought out at the stage of the project is the second exit to the garden directly from the kitchen. I am very pleased with this.
It was immediately foreseen that the entrance from the street should be through a heated vestibule. Otherwise, in winter, all the cold will immediately go to the house.
On the attic floor, we planned two bedrooms and dressing rooms, which I am very pleased with. No bulky cabinets for you! Even if it’s a “compartment” ... And it’s so convenient to enter the dressing room, choose what you need - freely, everything is clearly visible. True, not everything is still equipped there as you want. There is still enough work for her husband: to build shoe stands, to make a mezzanine ...
Then my husband acted wisely: I designed one through wardrobe and entry into it from each room. He made his own corrections: now in each room we have our own small, but quite roomy dressing room.
And there was still room for a toilet room. What I laughed at first: why do we need two toilets? She appreciated that there is a toilet near the bedroom, and there is no need to run down at night, much later, when they moved in. So honor and praise to my husband and his forethought!
Another joy-surprise for me was that on the stairs there was a small space for a study or just a workplace. At the project stage, we did not even think about it.
I had to add one more addition to our plan: an arched window so that the stairs were light. Immediately somehow it did not occur to me.
The house as a whole turned out to be very bright, cheerful and quite spacious. We like it, because everything is arranged in it exactly as we wanted.
But we were not able to design the boiler house-workshop initially, because the place on our site where the heating was supplied was occupied by two small sheds of the invading neighbors. I had to fight with them through the city administration. But the passion for the design of all kinds of documentation is a different story. But the boiler room was built only the next year.
Not immediately, we designed the veranda, but we got used to the balcony on the fifth floor and in our bedroom we made an exit to the future balcony, which was almost completed last year.

What should be taken into account when preparing your own home project yourself?
The most important thing is that the house construction project you developed is created based on the following principles:
Multiple functionality - that is, an erected house on this project will be convenient and practical in all respects. A do-it-yourself home project should be no worse than an architect’s one,
The simplicity of the design - it will not be difficult to make a house project only if it does not involve any frills. The creation of some particularly complex project, the implementation of which will require a huge amount of creative work, is highly not recommended to a person who does not have a special education, because you can ignore some fundamentally important things,
Aesthetics - of course, a country house should look beautiful and delight the eyes of its owners. The design of a reliable house should also be spectacular!
Remember - if the project is created taking into account these principles, then it will be very good in life. Again, this is a rather primitive independent structure - an amateur cottage will not design a premium cottage. Only an architect should be engaged in designing houses of this level - newcomers here often make mistakes.
Geological exploration of the house

Home Design Start
For an illustrative example, our editors used the program for a free demo version of the Visicon program. But all the actions can be performed on a regular sheet of paper. For example, a simple two-story house project of 10 mx 10 m was chosen
For the design of houses it will be necessary to “arm” with an ordinary notebook sheet in a box and a pencil, while setting the appropriate scale. The most rational thing in this situation will be as follows - ten meters of the site is conventionally designated by two cells. Thus, one millimeter on the ruler will equal 1 meter in real life - a ratio of one to a thousand.
Step 1: draw the outline of the house on the notebook sheet using a ruler and a pencil in a scale of 1: 1000, i.e. 1 mm on paper will be 1 meter
Drawing on the paper the contour of the site itself, as well as future buildings. In this case, all work must be carried out in strict accordance with the correct scale - carefully measuring each meter on the ground and applying it to paper in accordance with the dimensions of one to a thousand, you ensure the reliability and aesthetics of the building being constructed. You can draw a project in this way very quickly. It is necessary to take into account not only the contours of the site given for design and construction, but also all the facilities located on the site that were there before its planned construction, and at the same time it does not seem possible to transfer them. After that, it will be possible to begin designing the building itself - to simplify the task, suppose that the projected house will consist of four rooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms (standard housing for a family of several people).
Basement / foundation
A few words regarding the design of the basement. It should be noted that it is not always necessary. For example, if the groundwater is high, it will be a very expensive pleasure - it will be much easier to include another room in the project - as an additional room.
Ground floor project

Everything here will already be much easier - after all, the rooms in the house can be located identically (most importantly, do not change the relative position of the bathrooms - in order not to complicate the conduct of communications). It will be enough to design the location of the front door (many architects recommend making two entrances to the second floor - at home and from the street) and windows.

Attic and roof design
We decided to create a project of the house ourselves - it would not be necessary to try to draw some kind of too “abstruse” roof with a lot of bends. Remember - the roof is one of the most important structural components in the house, and it’s certainly not worth trying to create additional aesthetics by questioning reliability. All this will cause leaks to occur at the bends. Draw a project - please, profess the principles of minimalism in architecture.

There is one very important rule - all auxiliary facilities must be built on the north side. Despite the fact that the insulation made using building materials is of paramount importance, the relative position of the rooms cannot be overlooked either, if only because of the savings in energy consumption for heating a house.

The need to adjust the project. Even if you yourself were able to draw your dream home on paper, you will still need to consult with specialists before starting building a house - the opinion of a competent foreman or architect will not be superfluous. At a minimum, the following points will need to be agreed:
