Before talking about how to replace the background in Photoshop, I would like to explain why this is necessary. So, this will allow you to transfer the character of the photograph to any place of action that corresponds to the author’s intention - fantastic or even exotic. You can do this using the arsenal of tools of the well-known Photoshop program.

Method selection

If you don’t know how to replace the background in Photoshop, then we’ll bring to your attention the following ways: manually bypassing the shape contours using the tools from the Lasso set, automatically selecting image fragments using the Quick Selection and Magic Wand tools, creating masks in various ways and like that. Creating combinations of the functions of the above tools in one way or another, in the end, you will begin to understand how to replace the background in Photoshop - the necessary area along the contour should be framed by a flickering border.

To change the background on digital images, first of all, it is necessary that the character or object, which is not the background, be separated from, in fact, the background - now unnecessary - fragment of the image.

Now we need to ensure that all other parts of the image become transparent - then this background may take a different background.

Make the layers invisible

Having a selection, give the layers invisibility. This is another good example of how to replace the background in Photoshop. For this purpose, you will need to add the so-called transparency mask to the layer. You will see how the object you circled remained visible, and everything that went beyond the borders of the selected one became invisible - instead of images, a gray-white square of a technical background began to appear.

In this seemingly simple example of how to replace the background in Photoshop CS6, there is a pitfall. The procedure described above can work in any of the layers of Photoshop, except for a layer such as Background. You cannot technically assign a transparency mask to this layer. To see if this is true, look carefully at the layer panel, which you can open by pressing the F8 key.

This layer is created by default by the program as the base for digital images and differs from others, in fact, in that it has a significant number of limitations. In particular, he cannot change the transparency settings and move from his place.

What to do in this case? Remove all these restrictions, make the layer ordinary. To do this, it will be necessary in the context menu, which opens by clicking the left mouse button (if you are working in Windows) on the line with the name of the layer in the list, select the Layer from Background item. This command is also available through the main menu Layer> New> Layer from Background. Thus, the Background layer will be replaced by an ordinary one.

Now all the restrictions have been removed, you know how to replace the background with photos in Photoshop, and you can safely do the above process of assigning a transparency mask to a layer yourself.

Replacing the background with Marquee tools

Next, we will tell you how to replace the background in the photo in Photoshop using the tools from the Marquee set. To do this, open the file with the future background. We copy the images from it to the clipboard by selecting either a fragment of the image using the tools from the set, or simply selecting all the image fields by selecting Select All / in the Selection menu (or by pressing Ctrl + A). After highlighting, put the selected fragment on the clipboard by pressing Ctrl + C or selecting Copy in the Edit menu. Now go back to the original photos and paste the contents of the buffer: our new background. This operation is carried out by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V or by finding the Paste item in the Edit menu.

A new layer will appear in your composition, which will contain the background image. If you don’t know how to replace the background in Photoshop, it may happen that the new layer after insertion is located below the original transparent layer and completely or partially overlaps the latter. Of course, this is wrong, and in order to put things in order, go to the layers panel and swap places, simply dragging the lines with the names of the layers with the mouse so that the background is higher and the character layer is lower.

Set image size

It often happens that two images do not match in size. The inserted background should be either slightly smaller than the desired size, or, conversely, cumbersome relative to the original image of the character. We change the geometric size by pressing Ctrl + T and selecting the required layer in the list on the layer panel. After that, a small square pointer will appear at the edges of the layer, moving it, you can change the location and size of the layer, gradually achieving a harmonious arrangement of characters and background. After completing the conversion process, press the Enter key, thereby confirming the final selection of the desired size.

Change color

Further, it will be necessary to carry out another rather difficult operation. Both photographs, which now make up one composition, were taken, of course, under different lighting conditions, on different equipment and so on, therefore, their color will also be different. One image can be strikingly darker or lighter than another, photos can vary greatly in color shades - one can be, for example, blue, the other yellower. All this will certainly catch the eye of the audience, and if you do not achieve the effect of unnatural collages on purpose, you will have to work hard. For this reason, we consider it necessary to talk about how to replace the background color in Photoshop. To do this, you will need to consistently create an adjustment layer, completely or partially change the color and brightness of each image, after some time you will be able to achieve their correct ratio.

Incidentally, the carelessly created transparency mask of the main layer very often affects the degree of unnaturalness of alignment. The rest of the old background can “glow” along its contours, and small and thin details, for example, folds of clothes or hair, on the contrary, are roughly cut off, creating a feeling of “amputation”. All this can be fixed - the mask of transparency can be completed and changed at any time.

Additional items

It goes without saying that more elements can be added to the composition, they can also be located as additional background details - above the main image layer, and added to the foreground as details of the surroundings. If something does not fit or, on the contrary, there is too much extra space, you will need to change the size and proportion of the working field - this is done easily and simply through the main menu Image> Canvas Size.

Change background to white

And finally, we’ll talk about how to change the background to white in Photoshop.
The white background for your image can be assigned in several ways combined with each other.

The easiest way is to use the special “Fill” tool (G). Select the color you need through the palette and click on the area you are going to paint. This method will not work if there are many small details in the foreground. In this case, you will be forced to paint over each part separately. This can take a lot of precious time. Plus, an unfinished part may remain. In this case, you will have to paint it manually using a tool such as Brush (B) or Eraser (E).

Conclusion

Now you know how to replace the background in the photos in Photoshop. If you can’t perform any operations yourself, we recommend that you re-read our lesson again. There are even textbooks that will help you master the program on a professional level. For ease of development, you can Russify the program using special language packs. Additional software can be found on the official website.

Color correction

So, I already selected the object, or rather the background of the photo, and transferred it to a new layer using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J.

Now I go to the “Image” tab - “Correction”. There are a lot of options that will help change the hue: “Brightness / Contrast”, “Color balance”, “Photo filter” and even “Gradient map”. You can try each of them in order to first-hand understand how a particular tool works, choose an interesting method that you like specifically.

I will use Hue / Saturation.

You can pull on different sliders, achieving an excellent effect.

As you can see, you can’t name the differences striking, but you don’t need to fool your head with the selection so that the layers look uniform and professional, and the object does not stand out from the general background.

Dramatic changes

To make the background a completely different color, I will use the Color Swap tool all in the same Correction tab (about how to draw a black background for Photoshop -).

After opening the dialog box, your cursor will change. An eyedropper tool will be hidden in it. Just click on the color you want to change. Using the “Scatter” slider, determine the area you are going to work with, and then click on the color bar above the “Result” entry or work again with the “Tone”, “Saturation”, “Brightness” sliders.

I chose the first option. I clicked on the “Result” and now I select the hue and color on the palette so that the soft blue turns into pink.

Professional, fast, easy

The most successful tool for working with the colors of complex objects, in my opinion, is the color replacement brush. Hold the left mouse button on a regular brush for a long time until an additional menu opens.

Now select the shade by which you will change the color of the layer.

It remains only to paint over the necessary areas, as you can see, all the shades are preserved. Very fast and convenient.

You can repaint it in any suitable option.

Video instruction

Another way to change the color with a new layer is not too appealing to me, but I suppose that some may like it and certainly someday come in handy in the future. So, I create a new layer, and then I select the blending mode “Color Tone” for it.

Вот так должно получиться в итоге.

Теперь беру любой цвет, к примеру, желтый, инструмент «Заливка» и заливаю только что созданный слой.
