Work with sound is not only for employees of recording studios or amateur musicians, ordinary users may also need to process the audio file. For what? There are enough tasks: from simple conversion of formats (for example, FLAC to MP3) to creating an audio track to an amateur video. Cut one track into several or, conversely, glue it from fragments, clear it from noise, record your own sounds, even out the volume ...
And this is just a small list of what you can do yourself with the help of an audio editor - a program designed to process sound.
And since professional audio editors are very expensive and complex, it is better to use the simple and free Audacity program. I’ll now tell you how to use it to solve almost all “everyday” tasks in sound processing. And even a little more, right up to creating your own compositions and sounding videos.
Before proceeding to the description of actions, in a nutshell I will touch the program interface. For those who have never dealt with audio editors, this will be quite out of place.
So, any such program is a multi-channel tape recorder and, therefore, operates with the basic concept of “track” (track), which, in fact, contains sound (in analog form or MIDI sequence). There can be many such tracks, and each can contain anything, but they are played all at the same time, creating a real-time musical composition. Lyrical digression.
I think you already understand that you will have to work with each individual track. In the simplest version, you will not need anything other than classical operations: mark, cut, delete, paste. Scaling and moving blocks within a track are also useful. In essence, this is all that is needed to get started. Of course, you can not do without headphones / headsets - in the process of listening and editing material it is better to use them (reduce external noise), and connect the speakers at the final stage.
Task 1. Import / export sound track. Convert formats
Since we plan to work with standard sound formats, the above operation will be used more often than others. Generally speaking, an audio track can be obtained in two ways: a) create (for example, by recording from a microphone), b) load from a finished file. Actually, the second method is import, and you can implement it from the “File” menu by selecting “Import” - “Sound file”. You can also download via “File” - “Open”, but only if there is only one track. If there are several of them, you will have to import. In the same way, you can import a MIDI file or create an audio track by burning it from a microphone or CD.
Task 2. Analysis of voice recordings
If you often make memos recorded on the recorder, Audacity will help clean them up or simply parse the contents. We already know how to load a track, we can also cut it into parts, as well as convert it. It remains only to process.
The main operation - volume normalization - is performed by applying a number of effects to the track (menu "Effects"). If the sound is quiet, turn on “Equalizer” or “Normalization of the signal”. The Noise Removal plugins, as well as the Click and Crack Removal plugins will help clear the recording of noise.
It is necessary to work with each record individually, selecting effects and their parameters depending on the specific situation, therefore it is impossible to give ready-made recommendations - you will have to acquire your own experience.
But in the end, you will get a fairly clean and high-quality recording, which can be provided with a comment (“Track” - “Add a note to the selection”) and convert to MP3. For the archive (unless, of course, you keep it).
Task 3. Extract sound from the video.
Why is this needed? Sometimes you want to keep a beautiful melody or a phrase you like for a collection or even for your own creativity. But this is not all: it is possible, for example, to correct the sound of a not very high-quality dubbed film, to eliminate temporary shifts, to normalize the volume. Given that many players allow you to connect an audio track separately from the video, this feature is useful.
In order to extract tracks correctly, you must first download the FFmpeg library, this is done in the same way as in the case of LAME.
As a rule, effects are applied to the finished section of the audio track, but you can also use the synthesizer. To do this, you need to create a MIDI track in which to write control commands for the selected synthesizer instrument. In fact, this is an ordinary musical notation, familiar to anyone who has even studied a little music. However, even without special knowledge, it is not difficult to master the recording of MIDI commands. However, this is a topic for a separate article. Our compositions will mainly consist of ready-made fragments that will be processed by the selected effects (each separately) and arranged relative to each other so that a single sound track of the required duration is obtained. You can create in this way a soundtrack for an amateur film, as well as a DJ composition or even “plywood” for independent performance of your favorite song - it all depends on your imagination.
Of course, he is a free product. And you should not expect from him the quality that advanced paid editors like Adobe Audition or SoundForge can provide. Say, Audacity, unfortunately, does not support VSTi plug-ins, as well as ASIO (you cannot connect musical instruments). Yes, and functionality is limited. So you should not consider it as a full-fledged instrument for a musician or sound engineer. But for the solution of "everyday" problems, it will suit perfectly, allowing you to conveniently process the sound. In general, practically a "masthead" for a home user who relies on free or freeware software.
How to cut a song

- Download and install the MP3 codec for Audacity here.
- Launch the Audacity audio editor.
- In the left corner of the program, click "file - open" and open your favorite song that you want to cut.
- Using the tool to zoom in, reduce the step of the track to one second, this will help us more accurately determine the cut out area.
- Now listen to the song and record (remember) the time section you want to cut.
- Now you need to select this part of the sound, for this, at the bottom of the window, enter the seconds of the beginning and end of the selection. In this case, the corresponding selection will appear on the audio line.
- When the desired area is selected, select "Edit - Copy."
- Create a new project. Select "File - Create Project." A new Audacity window will open.
- In the new window, select "Edit - Paste."
- Click “File - Export”.
- In the file export window, select “File Type - MP3 Files”.
- Press the button parameters and set the quality to 320 kbps. Push approx.
- Enter the file name and click save.
- In the window for changing metadata, do not change anything and click ok.
That's all, close both windows of the audio editor and refuse to save.
