The quality of the make-up depends not only on cosmetics, the technique of its application and the condition of the skin, but also on the brushes, sponges and beauty blenders that are used. It is important to know how to wash makeup brushes, because the cleanliness of tools is the key to an ideal make-up. Brush care is required, even if they are not used daily or stored in separate cases.

Not only professional make-up artists, but also “ordinary” users of decorative cosmetics should think about washing accessories. We will tell you more about cleaning methods below.

Why wash makeup brushes

Cosmetic brushes are a huge category of makeup tools. This includes a variety of products for tonal foundations, concealers, powder, blush, bronzers and other products used in everyday make-up. The main task of the brushes is to ensure uniform distribution of the product over the skin.

When working with dry and liquid textures, the remains of cosmetics and skin particles are preserved on the surface of the instruments, which contributes to the rapid multiplication of bacteria and fungal infections, which are then transferred to the face. Dirty brushes are one of the causes of acne, blackheads and redness. Pathogenic microorganisms can contribute to the development of acne, an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, which is accompanied by purulent rashes and scarring of damaged skin areas. Wash brushes must beto avoid such problems.

Make-up brushes need to be washed regularly to prevent the development of bacteria and to extend the service life.

Makeup tools must also be kept clean for a number of other reasons:

  • to maintain their quality. The accumulation of foundation or powder in the bristles contributes to the bonding of the pile. Over time, the brushes lose their softness and apply the product worse, and also injure the skin,
  • to prevent color mixing of cosmetics. The use of funds of different shades can cause them to mix and get the wrong effect that was intended. That is, the color of the product will be different, and at the same time it will lie unevenly.

How to wash makeup brushes

To eliminate all dirt and maintain the quality of the brushes, there are special cleaners. In some cosmetics stores, you can buy a Brush Cleaner silicone finger applicator or a glove with a ribbed surface, with which you can delicately remove makeup residues. Shampoos and gels with a disinfecting effect are also on sale.

You can thoroughly wash the tools with improvised tools that are easy to find at home. The frequency of washing depends on the purpose of the brush and its appearance. It is worth noting that some of them need to be rinsed daily, others - every 2-3 days.

Let's consider in more detail how often you should wash makeup brushes at home:

  • for applying shadows - 2 times a month,
  • for eyebrow correction - 1 time per week,
  • for tonal basis, corrector - after / before each use,
  • for powder, blush, bronzer, dry corrector - 1 time per week,
  • for eyeliner - after each use.

For example, brushes made of natural pile are not recommended to be washed more than once a week to avoid wear of the bristles. But the beauty blender and sponge must be rinsed under running water daily or after each use, so that no product residues accumulate inside and bacteria do not multiply.

In addition to the purpose of the brushes, the frequency of washing depends, in particular, on the texture of the products used, as well as on the density of the pile. You can conditionally divide these methods into two categories:

Let us consider in more detail each of them.

Surface cleaning

Superficial cleansing is the fastest and most affordable way to care for cosmetic tools. It is suitable if you need to remove the remnants of powder, eyeshadow or foundation, when, in principle, the fibers themselves are relatively clean and a little product has accumulated.

This method is often used for thin brushes (for example, for applying lipstick, eye shadow or liquid concealer) with a small amount of bristles. To do this, you will need:

  • antiseptic (sold in the department of cosmetic products),
  • antibacterial or sanitary napkins.

The procedure is very simple. Do this:

  • apply a small amount of antiseptic and rub it a little into the pile with massage movements,
  • leave for 30-40 seconds,
  • wipe on a tissue until the pigment is completely removed from the brush.

This method relates to rapid cleaning and is not suitable for continuous use, since it does not completely eliminate bacteria and product residues. It can be used on the road or on vacation, but this should not be the only method of brush care.

Deep cleaning

This method is much more effective than the previous one. It eliminates bacteria, cosmetic residues and dead skin particles that accumulate inside the pile. There are many ways to deep clean make-up tools at home. At the same time, many users of decorative cosmetics have a question how to wash a brush in order to maintain its quality.

Much depends on the material of the pile. For example, for natural and artificial bristles you will need different care products. The same goes for sponges and beauty blenders. It is important to know how and how to wash makeup tools so as not to spoil them. Consider several popular ways to wash cosmetic brushes at home.

Baby shampoo

Such a budget and affordable product as baby shampoo, it turns out, also cleans brushes perfectly. Unlike shower gel or liquid soap, it does not cause irritation and is suitable for sensitive skin, while it foams well and is quickly washed off with water. For the procedure you will need:

Perform a few simple manipulations:

  • wet the sponge with warm water,
  • squeeze out a small amount of baby shampoo and foam it,
  • in a circular motion, pile along the sponge. Then rinse off the dirty foam. If the pigment is not completely washed, add more shampoo and repeat the procedure until the foam is clean,
  • rinse the pile under running warm water, gently squeeze it and pat it with a dry towel.

This procedure can be carried out 1-2 times a month. This method is great for brushing with natural bristles.

Antibacterial soap

Soap is a budget product with a wide scope. Each girl definitely has it at home, so this method of cleaning tools from cosmetics is perhaps the most affordable. For the procedure you will need:

  • a piece of soap,
  • container with warm water.

Follow these steps:

  • moisten the soap under the tap,
  • put it in a container of water,
  • use soft circular motions over soap until foam appears,
  • continue to manipulate until the foam is clear
  • rinse well under running water and gently wipe with a dry towel. If there are traces of cosmetics on it, repeat all over again.

Avoid pressing the pile so that it does not come out of the bundle and does not remain on the surface of the soap. It is better not to wet the handle so that the glue connecting the bristles and the handle does not dissolve. This method is great for caring for artificial brushes, but is not recommended for natural bristles.

Natural oil

Another budgetary tool with which you can completely wash tools from cosmetics is oil. For this purpose, olive, almond, coconut or any other that is at home is suitable. It gently removes dirt, while moisturizing the pile, therefore it is often used to clean natural bristles.

For the procedure you will need:

Oil brushing is very easy. To do this, follow these steps:

  • apply a small amount of oil to the pile and rub it a little into the bristles,
  • leave the product for a while (15-20 minutes),
  • rinse off the oil using soap and a sponge,
  • keep wiping the pile until the foam is clean,
  • rinse the bristles under warm running water,
  • gently wipe it with a towel. If traces of cosmetics remain, repeat all over again.

Soap the hair well to wash off the oil, otherwise it will stick together and leave a greasy mark on the skin when applying makeup. At the same time, try not to press hard on it when washing, so that it does not come out. Correctly dry the brushes with a pile down so that the water does not drip onto the handle.

How to wash makeup puffs

Sponge and beauty blender are often used when applying foundation. Although they do not have a fluffy pile, but still require regular care. The remnants of cosmetic products also accumulate in them and bacteria multiply, so they should be washed after each use. Keeping sponges clean is very simple due to their spongy structure. For this purpose, you can use baby shampoo or soap.

Follow the instructions below:

  • moisten the sponge under warm running water,
  • apply a small amount and foam like a sponge,
  • rinse the foam well and repeat the procedure again,
  • keep applying until all the dirt is completely washed out of the sponge
  • rinse the sponge under running water and squeeze it well.

Sponge can be dried on a towel. For storage, use the plastic container in which the product is usually sold.

Before removing various stains from clothes, you need to find out how safe the chosen solvent is for the fabric itself. It is applied in a small amount to an inconspicuous part of the thing from the inside for 5-10 minutes. If the material retains its structure and color, you can go to the spots.

It is easiest to remove scale and carbon from the sole of the iron with common salt. Pour a thick layer of salt onto the paper, heat the iron to the maximum, and several times, pressing lightly, slide the iron over the salt litter.

The habit of "economically" using a washing machine can lead to the appearance of an unpleasant odor in it. Washings at temperatures below 60 ℃ and short rinses allow fungi and bacteria from dirty clothes to remain on the inner surfaces and actively multiply.

Fresh lemon is not only suitable for tea: clean the dirt from the surface of the acrylic bath by rubbing with half a cut citrus, or quickly wash the microwave, putting in it a container of water and lemon slices for 8-10 minutes at maximum power. Softened dirt will simply wipe with a sponge.

There are special traps for fighting moths. Pheromones of females attracting males are added to the sticky layer with which they are coated. Adhering to the trap, they drop out of the breeding process, which leads to a decrease in the moth population.

The threads of gold and silver, which in ancient times embroidered clothes, are called the cantle. To obtain them, the metal wire was long pulled by ticks to the state of the required subtlety. From here came the expression “pull (breed) the gimlet” - “to do long, monotonous work” or “to delay the completion of a business”.

If the first signs of bearing in the form of untidy spools appeared on your favorite things, you can get rid of them with the help of a special machine - a shaver. It quickly and efficiently shaves the fibers of the fabric that have gathered in lumps and restores things to a dignified appearance.

In the dishwasher, not only plates and cups are well washed. You can load plastic toys, glass shades of fixtures and even dirty vegetables, such as potatoes, but without the use of detergents.

Stretch ceilings made of PVC film are able to withstand from 70 to 120 liters of water per 1 m 2 of their area (depending on the size of the ceiling, its degree of tension and the quality of the film). So you can not be afraid of leaks from neighbors from above.

Why wash them at all?

Imagine that the brush is a towel with which you wipe your face. We already wrote that it needs to be changed quite often if you do not want to once again spread the bacteria. Same thing with makeup tools. You may even have noticed that if you do not clean the pile for a long time, rashes appear on the skin. Julie Russak, MD and founder of the New York Dermatology Clinic, is convinced that if you use the same brush every time you apply makeup, it can clog your pores. You spread dirt and bacteria from the face to the brush, and then back to the face. It is fraught with acne and irritation.

How often do this?

The brushes with which you apply liquid textures (tonnik, cream blush, concealer) should be sanitized every time after use (or at least 1-2 times a week). Brushes for dry textures can be washed much less often - the famous makeup artist Bobby Brown, for example, advises cleaning tools for the area around the eyes twice a month, and all the rest - once a month.

What do brushes usually wash?

It is better to build on what material you have brushes on. For example, synthetic ones are less whimsical; they can be cleaned with organic soap or dishwashing detergent. For natural ones, it is better to use gentle compounds - professional brushes or baby shampoo. Here is a life hack from makeup artist Mario Dedivanovich: he washes his tools with Johnson’s Baby shampoo, adding tea tree oil to it for an additional antibacterial effect.

To quickly cleanse the brushes with which you apply liquid textures, napkins, spray or oil are suitable (these tools can be found on many professional brands for makeup artists). Wipes are most convenient: just wipe the brush after each use and that's it. It is more difficult with oil: it must first be applied to a lint-free napkin, and then only then brush it. This is not so convenient, but from experience we can say that oil cleans more efficiently. Spray is needed more likely for an antibacterial effect. This is also a good option for express processing. The ideal set that you will need is a special shampoo (for general cleaning) and wipes / spray (for every day).

Some practice washing their tools with their regular hair shampoo, shower gel, or even laundry soap. We would not recommend continuing in the same vein, especially if you have natural brushes. If you do not want to buy a special product, it is better to take a baby shampoo or organic soap, so as not to spoil the pile at least.

For more advanced users who want to do everything on a professional level, we advise you to purchase a mitten or brush mat. These are such things made of silicone that help to thoroughly clean the tool. They (as well as a stand for drying) can be found at some American brands or ordered on the same Aliexpress.

How to wash brushes?

In warm water. First, dampen the brush in a jet with pile down, then squeeze the detergent onto the hand and in a circular motion begin to clean it on your palm. Do not push hard, try to act as if you are washing your head - as softly as possible. You can gently sort through the pile with your fingers to better clean it from the inside. Keep doing this until the water is clear. With a washing mat, everything is simpler: you just lay it on the bottom of the sink and pour a little money directly on it. Then in a circular motion, clean the brush on the ribbed surface.

How to dry brushes?

We say right away: not on the battery and not a hairdryer. A hairdryer will do the same with them as with your hair; if you randomly blow hot air at them, they will “fluff” in all directions. Gently squeeze the pile with a napkin (but do not twist it) and place the brushes on a special stand with the pile down. By the way, enthusiasts make it themselves from clerical gum and a wooden cutting board. But you can not bother so much - just lay the brushes on a clean towel.

Variety of makeup brushes

Brushes allow you to make the perfect make-up. They are used for applying:

  • tonal foundation
  • corrector
  • powder
  • blush
  • means for adjusting the shape of the nose,
  • shadows
  • eyeliner
  • lipstick and lip gloss,
  • mascara and eyebrow shadow.

There are a lot of varieties of makeup brushes

Bacteria accumulate in the bristles of the brushes. They get on the skin, causing irritation and inflammation. Due to the use of unwashed tools, the infection penetrates into make-up products. Dirty brushes lose their elasticity, softness. There is also an aesthetic reason for cleaning. Cosmetics of various shades are alternately applied with one brush. Mixing them can ruin your makeup. Therefore, brushes must be cleaned.

If the pile is natural, wash it at least once a week. Ideally, it is wise to carry out the cleaning procedure after each use of the beauty tool.

Synthetic bristles become more dirty. Therefore, it requires daily cleaning. After each use, the sponges are also cleaned. Tools for eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara require special attention. The eye area is characterized by increased sensitivity. After each use, antiseptic treatment is mandatory.

Methods for cleaning cosmetic brushes

The simplest and most popular brush cleaner is liquid soap or shampoo. For washing, prepare:

Be sure to take a new sponge. Those already used for washing dishes are not suitable. Replace baby shampoo with a permissible soft gel for the body, cosmetic foam.

How to wash brushes with shampoo

Moisten the sponge with water and drip the shampoo from about a pea. Gently brush the sponge with a brush. The resulting foam envelops the tool. Pressing hard is undesirable so as not to damage the villi. The maximum number of brushes washed simultaneously is two. After they wash the sponge and squeeze the shampoo again.

Rinse the brushes under a stream of heated water, turning to clean the bristles. Washing under hot water is contraindicated. If rinsing alone is not enough, rinse should be repeated. To restore the shape, the treated brush is gently shaken, removing excess moisture.

How to wash brushes with solid soap

Cleaning is permissible with a solid soap. The method is especially effective for washing synthetic brushes. It is advisable to choose detergents that do not leave deposits on the villi. For washing, prepare:

A piece of soap is moistened with water, put in a prepared container and carried out with brushes. Cautiously create a plentiful foam, achieving its uniform distribution on beauty tools. You do not need to press hard: the soap itself will clean the bristles of the brush.

Wash brushes with running warm water, turning in different directions. The stream of water should not be strong. Check the brush for plaque from soap and traces of cosmetics. If they are, the cleaning procedure will have to be repeated.

How to Brush Almond or Olive Oil

Rinse brushes with natural bristles well with olive oil or almond. It will take a large spoonful of funds. It is poured onto a clean sponge. A brush is carried out along it so that all the villi are in oil. You can take more money to wash the tool for sure. Continue the procedure until the brush is completely cleansed. Tools are washed under warm water to remove oil, rotating in the hands.

To get rid of heavy contaminants, the combined method is suitable. A little oil is poured onto a paper towel. With movements that mimic the coloring of the wall, they brush the napkin with a brush. Leave the tool until the product is absorbed into the pile. A little shampoo is applied to the hand. Gently and thoroughly wash the brushes. The excess water is gently squeezed, the brushes are dried.

Special tools and instruments

Use special tools to clean the brushes: Brush Cleaner, shampoo, spray. They are in the lines of well-known cosmetic brands. The tool is applied to the brush, leaving for the specified time, then washed with warm water. For washing, use a silicone applicator BrushEgg, special mittens.

Brushes are easy to clean with the BrushEgg applicator

It is convenient to carry out cleaning with them. It is only necessary to avoid a lot of pressure on the handle of the brush when washing.

How to cook a professional cleaning product yourself

With professional use, brushes need disinfection. A special cleaner will help to cope with the task. Brushes are dipped into it, removed and wiped with paper napkins. The product evaporates quickly due to the alcohol in the composition. Even removing sticky lipstick marks takes 3-4 seconds. If the brushes are for personal use only, a similar cleaning method is not required.

Due to the drying effect of alcohol, the fibers break over time. Therefore, it is not recommended to use professional cleaners often without the need.

A solution for cleaning brushes can be done independently. Would need:

  • 2 glasses of pure water
  • 2 large tablespoons of vinegar,
  • 2 large spoons of a liquid detergent,
  • whisk
  • paper towels,
  • capacity.

The process of preparing the product will take no more than 5 minutes. The procedure is as follows.

  1. Water is put on fire and heated, but not boiled. Too high a temperature is detrimental to natural pile.
  2. Pour liquid into a container, add detergent, vinegar.
  3. The mixture is whisked to a light foam.
  4. The brushes are lowered one by one into the solution, immersing only the villi.
  5. The instruments are kept for 3-4 seconds, so that the product reaches the central bristles. Brush lightly massaged.

While washing in solution, brush a little

Synthetic brushes are cleaned with an alcohol solution. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. For 8 parts of water, 2 parts of alcohol and 1 part of shampoo are taken.
  2. The bristles of the brushes are lowered into the solution, the product is gently rubbed.
  3. Then it is washed off with a stream of warm water from the tap. It is acceptable to clean with a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar. The brushes are washed in the finished product, rinsed and dried.

How to dry brushes and sponges

Drying is an obligatory stage of competent care for beauty tools. Fingers of peeled brushes are pressed with fingers. It is permissible to shake the brush to give it its former shape. Each cosmetic tool gets wet and laid out with a slight slope on the towel with the handle up. This will protect the brush from moisture in the metal part and the destruction of the adhesive layer.

Dried cosmetic brushes on a towel with a slight tilt with the handle up

To speed up the drying process, it is highly recommended not to use a hairdryer and other appliances. Under the influence of high temperatures, the glue that fixes the pile is destroyed. Brushes with natural bristles must not be dried near heating appliances.

Spread all the beauty tools at a distance from each other, not close to each other. It is important to completely dry the brushes. It is recommended that you clean in the evening so that the brushes are completely dry by morning. If in the arsenal there is a brush of a special shape, for example, fan-shaped, then its bristles are corrected before drying, giving their original shape.

Clean brushes are stored in an upright position, putting on each protective cap.

Sponges are also dried on a towel until completely dry. Drying will require a warm place without artificial heat sources.

How to clean a sponge from foundation or powder

Sponge or powder puff - the device you need. It is recommended to rinse it immediately after applying cosmetics. Erase a sponge with soap in warm water. If the skin is prone to irritation, professionals recommend washing the sponge in hot water and before applying make-up. Once a week for disinfection, the sponge is soaked in soapy water for a quarter of an hour.

How to peel a sponge egg

A sponge egg or a beauty blender is used to perfectly apply the foundation. And it should be washed as usual sponges. The "egg" is rinsed with warm water, rubbed lightly with soap to get rid of the absorbed cream.

You can use professional products to wash your sponges. They are applied to the stained surface and massaged with fingers. After cleaning, the sponge is rinsed until the soap is completely washed out.

How often to wash makeup tools

Professionals recommend a thorough cleaning of all cosmetic tools twice a month. For daily disinfection, treatment with antibacterial wipes is suitable. It is very good to keep the sponge once a week under a quartz lamp for 1-2 minutes.

I always use brushes. I do not stop ordering and purchasing all new ones, read reviews on the Internet and various beauty blogs. My brush every 1-2 weeks, depending on the degree of contamination and the frequency of use of each of the brushes. Those that I use every day - powder, a brush for tone, for blush, for lipstick and eye shadow - I wash every 3-4 days. A tonic brush, for example, I try to wash as often as possible. She quickly absorbs the product, which is not so easy to get rid of, and the next day to apply a layer of tone over the past days, oh, I don’t feel like ... I’m thinking about ordering a spray for myself!
